is it true that the only way to empty the TC on these is to drop the gear box, or is there another way to get to the TC plug

 

You can take it to a transmission shop and they can pump the fluid out from the oil cooler lines if they have the proper machine. The down side of this is to be extremely careful when removing the lines. The lines tend to take the threads off the oil cooler when removed. Then you've turned a simple fluid change into a costly repair.
