Default belt noise- 94 xj6

Hopefully this will be an easy one. I am trying to get to the root of a belt squeal during cranking. I dont hear it once it starts. All belts seem to be in good condition and tight enough. However I notice that there are no bolts/ studs in the water pump pulley. Since it has the electric fans, I am wondering if there are supposed to be any and what size they should be if there are. Barrats catalog shows a stud, but does not specify size or if there is a cut-off point for those with the electric fans. but XKs shows a photo of the pump with pulley and no bolts saying it is for 93-4, and 94 xjs.. Comments? Thanks!

I had belt noise like that for years, belts looked ok but changed the two small ones for new ones and noise went away. I didn't change the big one (yet)

I even thought it was the harmonic balancer crapping out but no, just glazed belts.

No idea on the bolts but will have a look next time I open the hood however after doing the water valve, gonna keep the hood shut for a while.

I dont blame you there. Its not wise to tempt fate that way. I suspect that its a pressed on pulley, although the holes feel like they're threaded. I also put a chalk mark on the crank pulley at the front and at the flat area between the 2 belt grooves. Drove my several miles and saw no shifting there. I do have more belts.......

Hi Jerry,

If I recall, the same water pump fits the '88-'92 cars and the pump makers continue to drill and tap the holes to accept the fan clutch on the earlier cars, but they aren't used on the later cars. The pumps for the '93-'94 cars have the wider pulley to accommodate the 5(?)-rib belt that was introduced with the higher-output alternator.

On some belt-driven components, the pulley holes are tapped so you can run screws through the holes to press against the component body to push the pulley off the shaft, but I don't think that's the case with the XJ40 water pumps.

Cheers,

Don
