That could be a multitude of things! You should start by checking relevant fuses (dont know wher they are on your model, sorry) and relays also. You dont say if you've tried locking etc. with the remote, do you have one? The locks may have to be synchronised, as had happened to me with an old BMW. It involves a process of opening and closing, (locking and unlocking) in a particular order. Maybe try a search on the forums here, lots of useful info. It does sound electrical though, perhaps a blown fuse, bad connection/ earth. I'm always happier when something just plain doesn't work, full stop, rather than an intermittent problem, which tends to be harder to pin down. Sorry not to be of much help, but do a search and good luck.

I also recently acquired a '90 XJ6 and had quite a few door lock issues, including one broken door handle. My locks were very stiff, to the point that I could not use the internal lock knobbies on the rear doors. I sprayed WD-40 and silicone lube on the latches and inside (thru child lock switch opening) as best as possible, and worked them up and down. This got them working manually. I still have one rear door handle/lock that is stiffer than I am comfortable with so I will pull the door panel and shoot some lube inside.
Good luck!
