I've never worked on an XJ40 so consider what follows to be generic.

I'd remove the injector then reconnect the hose an wires. Have a helper crank the engine while you watch for (and be ready for) strong spray of fuel.

The engine will have to be stone cold as CSIs have thermo-timers that prevent them from operating on a warm engine ....or operating too long on cold engine. You'll get a spray of fuel lasting from about 1-6 seconds depending on temp.

If the CSI isn't working the engine will be hard starting when cold. The colder the temp, the harder the starting. In 70ºF conditions you might not notice much difference at all. In sub-freezing conditions it'll probably be damn hard to get the thing started

Cheers

Doug is correct about K Jetronic, P jetronic, D Jetronic and L Jetronic fuel injection cold start systems.

The last Jaguars to use a CSV (They are considered valves, not injectors as they spray continuously during cranking until the thermo-time switch interrupts) were the Series III XJ6 and the early 5.3 V12s.

The AJ6 engine does not have any extra cold start valves or injectors. Only the 6 in the intake manifold.
