Default Coldair Intake 3.6L 89' XJ6

I found and installed a suitable reusable air filter today that fits perfectly in my car. After searching for aftermarket kits I decided to just do my own, had to cut the filter box down to a stub with a sawzal.

Picture of filter.

For anyone who is interested this is the product that fits perfectly.

Sounds growly and definitely faster when flooring it up the highway.

Hi VancouverXJ6,

That's a nice-looking installation. I guess my question would be, since the stock intake draws denser cold air through a passage in the left fender/wing, but your intake now draws less dense heated air from the engine compartment, is any potential gain undermined? A lot of the aftermarket intakes that use K&N filters include a heat shield to help overcome this issue, though I don't know how effective the shields are. It might be worth adding some sort of heat shield to your installation to reduce the intake of pre-heated air.

Since an air filter that can allow more air to pass can also allow larger grit to pass, I'm not a fan of K&N filters in street cars, though they make perfect sense in racing vehicles that are rebuilt frequently. There have also been reports of the oil required on a K&N filter fouling the hot wire in the MAF.

My compromise was to use the stock air filter and housing but to replace the tapered inlet snorkel with a straight hose. I did this on both our '88 and '93, and I agree the engine feels more responsive with access to more air, although I don't trust my "butt dyno" to know if the cars became any quicker due to the change. The photos at the link below show the mod on our '93:

By the way, the inlet snorkels on the '88-'89 cars were more dramatically tapered to a smaller inlet diameter. Beginning with the 4.0L cars, the snorkels were redesigned with less taper and a larger inlet opening. I believe the only reason for the tapered snorkel was to reduce induction noise, so the only penalty for replacing it with a straight hose is an increase in noise, which most owners find welcome.

Cheers,

Don
