Why not the turbo buick v6 from a grand national, they will flat out eat v8s for lunch and get great mileage to boot

of for that matter a LS 1, 2 ,3, 6, or 7, these all are totally high hp street engines that because of their superior head design out flow and outproduce many earlier and later V8 and most are a dime a dozen now in a junk yard with lots of aftermarket support

 

I have to agree, if your stuck on the V6 this would be the way to go.
