Default Coolant Reservoir Leak & Stripped Mounting Stud

Ok so got my bushings in and about to put them on the jag. Now 2 problems. The nut that holds on the coolant reservoir is missing threads. Got the nut off with some redneck ingenuity but the bold is trashed. Can see where it goes into the body either. Does anyone know where that bolt terminates? Took the tire and the wheel well out but no joy.

Second problem is the reservoir itself. Obviously it isn't supposed to leak but I can't tell what it is suppose to look like and if it is just the hose leaking or the actual unit. Don't want to spend more than I need to so a picture of the unit around the seam would be helpful.

So as any redneck engineer would tell you... in a hurry and parts busted... washers my boy washers.

I'll fix permanent when I figure out the reservoir thing.

Rutty,

I have moved your posts about your coolant reservoir to a new thread since they have nothing to do with tie rod ends.

It's not difficult to remove the reservoir or to simply disconnect it to lift it up for inspection. The photos at the link below show how I replaced the reservoir on our '93 after I discovered a leak in the seam near the mounting ear:

Hi Rutty

I can't help on the bolt, but it looks like the seam is going on the reservoir. Not an uncommon problem I'm afraid. However to double check you could clean up the reservoir and tighten the hose clamps up a bit and see if that helps.

The part is still available new, but there have been reports of poor quality and they are not cheap either.

Cheers

Steve

Rutty,

One possible solution to the stripped threads on the stud might be to use a metric hex coupling nut, essentially a really long nut that might be able to bridge across the section of stripped threads. You'd just need to figure out what the thread is. See McMaster-Carr for one source:

Still haven't gotten around to working on that stripped nut but it is holding for now.

Found that the leak wasn't the seal after all. I tightened the tube clips on the hoses and all is good. Probably will replace hoses next and clean up the mounts but for now all seems ok. Thanks all for the help.

Hi Rutty,

If the hoses you're describing are the ones that attach to the coolant reservoir, they're just standard straight coolant hose, which you can buy at any local auto parts store - no need to pay for expensive Jaguar parts.

Don
