Default Exact location of modules

Hi: Where precisely in a 94 US model XJ40 are the auto trans control module and the main ECM for the engine fuel, emissions and ignition management? I suspect a wet water condition across the terminals and need to find them and dry them and reseat them. Thank you. --Tom

Hmmm ... getting that much moisture in AZ?

I believe they are both located behind the passenger side dash liner.

WARNING: To prevent accidental deployment (and avoid getting hurt) you should disable the airbag system before doing any work on the instrument panel!

You are going to have to:
  1. disconnect the battery negative cable
  2. remove the lower instrument panel on the passenger side under the glove box
  3. remove the glove compartment from the passenger compartment
  4. remove the screws from the ECU bracket
  5. lower the ECU and unplug the electrical connectors

Exclamation

In addition ...

CAUTION: If the stereo in your vehicle is equipped with an anti-theft system, make sure you have the correct activation code before disconnecting the battery!

They are both below the RH blower motor above the passenger's feet. They have been known to get damp a time or two! ECM has two connectors, the TCM has one big one.

Cheers,

Here's a 1 pager on what Haynes has to say about "pulling the ECU" from an XJ40.

There is a pic of the ECU in place.

Thank you guys a million. This car I write about is in Jacksonville FL and belongs to my brother who admits he did a rather aggressive detail washing of the car this past week and that is when the trouble started. I will learn from this and never get too wild with the water sprayer anywhere near my X-type here in dry AZ. He does not have computer access so I came on here to look for help. All of your good advice has been sent to him the old fashioned way: a phone message. Thank you again. --Tom H
