Default HELP! mysterious and annoying problem!! XJ6

I have an unusual problem...
I have a 1994 XJ6 with 120000 miles ad here is my issue

Just replaced the MAF because it was throwing the code and my haynes service book indicated this was the cause of the issue... it wasnt....

Car will start when cold and run perfect. It will drive and run great for as long as you want shifts/runs great the problem comes when you shut it down.

when i try to start it after it has been running it immediatly starts then dies i have no idea why it does this. here is what i have checked..
new distributor. new MAF. New spark plug wires.

motor has excellent compression and burns no oil.

Is it my crank positions sensor?
a coil problem?
a simple relay acting up

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE advise...
my last resort is to take it to a jag dealer and spend waay to much
I need help from the jag experts.
besides throwing parts at it what can i do/check to narrow things down?

PLEASE HELP

Add to Bob' list:

Next time it happens, remove the fuel filler cap and see if you get an inrush of air to the tank.

Update ,
....

Checked the gas cap when the no start condition was occurring there was not negative pressure in the tank.
Disconnected the fuel line at the back of the rail when I turn the key to on no gas comes out of the line... So when this condition occurs I am not getting fuel.
Since the car only does this on occasion I am thinking this must be electronic... Relay etc... When the car does start it runs and idles fine with no issue.
What would cause the pump not to activate sometimes at start up.
Thanks in advance.

18 years of sitting in gas would do it.

Might just try turning the key on and off several times - if this works, guaranteed time to replace the pump.

Thank you all for your responses I replaced the relay and have added a can of heat to every tank and I have not had a problem sense.

Thanks for posting the result.

It's always very helpful for anyone with a similar issue to see a conclusion describing the successful actions.

If that solves the problem for you, it might be a good idea to change the fuel filter also
