Default Help please...heater control pannel question. XJ 40

Could someone please advise me.........
I have a problem with my friends 1992 XJ40. The heater hontrol knob has packed up.
I have a 1987 XJ40 for parts.
The 1992 system has 1 cirquit board attached, but the 1987 has 2 boards with older technology.
I understand that technology improved and they reduced the number of chips and stuff needed etc, but can I replace the more modern single board with the older double board?
I am scared of just swapping them and trying it out for fear of blowing something else:
I hope someone with experience in these things can help.
I have seen a detailed post re micro switch swap, and the blower controles and inner board look very different, but they are USA cars. These are European cars.
Many thanks, and sorry about the spelling.
Paul.
