Default Help..Won't rev past 4000rpm

Today i found my battery dead, it seems my cooling fans are staying on all the time. Since my battery has been drained it the rpms won't raise past 4000. It's runs like a brand new car other than that horrible miss. No engine light our codes at all. I'm currently unhooking the fuse for the fans while in not driving it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Today i plugged in the fuse for the cooling fans.. They are operating normally, but the very bad cough is now around 3500rpms instead of 4000.... Which is pretty much in the downshift range when accelerating and i cant accelerate very quickly from a stop.
Also today when i first started the car... I could make it go all the way to the red. Then 5 mins later i started my way to work and same ol cough.

Hi 40man,

Does the VCM on your car display any Diagnostic Trouble Codes, such as Fuel Fail 44 (just as an example)? If you haven't read DTCs before, turn the key to position II (do not start the engine), then press the VCM button on the trip computer panel to the right of the steering wheel. If one or more DTCs is stored, the first one will be displayed on the LCD panel at the bottom edge of the instrument panel. Let us know if any code is displayed and we'll go from there.

Cheers,

Don

Hello Don, i already knew all about the DTC. Never had a car that had that before so i got real familiar with it lol.... But actually the problem went away 2 days after my last post.

On another note... My rear shock absorbers and bushing are needing to be replaced, but i can't tell wich ones to buy. Taking the tires off.. It looks as if the 2 are different.

Hi 40Man,

Our '93 XJ40 Vanden Plas was originally equipped with shocks made by Boge, a German company now part of ZF, the conglomerate that made the transmissions and steering racks in our cars. I tried Bilsteins on our '88 (they were original equipment on some XJ40s), but they were too harsh on our car, so I've mostly used Boge ever since. I am currently running Sachs shocks in the rear, which are the exact same part as the Boges (same factory number stamped on the body of the shock). You'll have to shop around for the best price.

When you buy new shocks, they will typically come with new cylindrical bushings, washers and nuts (parts 13, 15, 16 & 17 in the diagram at the link below). You will also need the large foam "donut" spring isolator bushings (part 5) and the rubber guide bushes or "top hats" (part 14), which deteriorate and should not be reused.

These parts are available from Jaguar but you'll probably find more affordable prices from independent Jag specialists such as Coventry West, SNG Barratt, Welsh Enterprises, etc.

Note that the diagram I provided above is from the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust parts service, jaguarclassicparts.com. The diagrams there are invaluable, and they're a great source for authentic Jaguar parts too.

Cheers,

Don
