Default How to do a repair of rubber "boot" around gas tank filler neck?

My 1994 Xj6 that I use as a regular driver has a problem with a split in the rubber boot that surrounds and seals around the gas tank filler neck. Mine has a split in the boot and I am 100% sure these are no longer available. With a split in this rubber boot I am sure I am getting water down in the boot when it rains. Anyone have any tips for how to patch it up?

Ive been considering contact cement and a trim-to-fit chunk of bicycle tire tube for mine. Too cold out there right now though....

I used Permatex black rubber sealant 80338 to repair a split in mine and it worked. You're right that new ones are NLA.

Did you use any special prep to clean the rubber?

Nothing special, I think I did a gentle clean with soap and water to remove dirt and dust and let it dry well. Then applied the cement where there were tears/splits on both sides of the tear.

Sounds safe. I had a used one that I replaced the original one with, but this one seems to have burst as well. Thanks.
