Default I purchased an 88 xj, please help! : )

hello everyone, i recently purchased an 88 xj6 with 55k miles. it is at the repair shop getting $600 worth of repairs (brake master cylinder and something else because the engine was rattling but i should have it back tomorrow morning.) there is not a dent on the body, or rip in the leather. the paint shines like new. what do you guys think? did i make a good purchase?

test the car with low and high speed in city as well as on highway. rough road and smooth road so that if anything is unfair it appears on it. make drive atleast two times in all condition for exact result.

No idea what you paid, but the car looks great. Obviously a PO has spent some money on it.

thanks everyone, i got it back from the mechanic today after $700 in a brake master cylinder, a back cover gasket, and some new bosch plugs. what do you guys think it is worth?

Yes. This looks normal for 88. Although; If possible, ask the mechanic about the brand and fitment note for the master cylinder, cover and plugs, he was used in your 88 XJ6. Also know the individual cost for the parts from mechanic and later, you can surf on the auto parts website to compare the prize for the same dimension parts.

he used expensive parts because the labor was only $225 i believe and the rest were parts. how much do you think the car is worth?

I'm also in CA (san francisco) and I'll take a shot at valuation...
These cars seem to go for about $2 - $3000 up here. That is for a worn, but functioning car with minor issues.
I would guess you could get about $4k for it in tip top shape and with the low miles you have. Might be able to get a little more for it if you are lucky and can find someone who really needs to have an 88 XJ6 for whatever reason...
Car looks great in the pictures by the way!
My advice is hang on to it and try to keep it looking and running well. Keep up on the maintenance and even learn to do some of it yourself to keep the running costs down. You will have the best looking and performing sedan (by far in my opinion that you can get for that kind of money.

From the photos it looks in amazingly good condition for an early XJ40, so it has obviously been cherished by its previous owners. Here in the UK these cars are not worth very much as a lot of people don't like the squared-off style, but if you like it then that's all that matters. Enjoy !!

well i'm only asking because it's a very nice car obviously, but its not my cup of tea exterior style wise. I actually only wanted to get a series 1 with a swapped 350 and this car i went to take a look at and it was an old ladies. she hadn't driven it in a while for whatever reason so i got it for a low price even though i've already put $700 into it but the car runs and stops fine now. i'm not thinking of selling it unless i get $4.5-5k or trade+cash for a series 1/mercedes 250/280s/se/sel etc.

As i said earlier, it was normal if you paid $575-600 but the exact price would depend on parts brands and its fitment note. If you have a quote regarding the parts detail, which he used, then it will be easy to get the total cost of repairs.

Beauty car.

Something to search about and check/know... the air plenum intake in front of the windscreen has a rubber drain hose at each side. Check them occasionally to be sure they are still there, and are not clogged with debris. If that area does not drain properly the water can get places (control modules) it's not supposed to. I'm thinking it's contributed mightily to the rust-out I have in the fenders and rockers behind the front wheels.
