Idle Air Delivery Problem?

Idle Air Delivery Problem?
I am a bit confused here. A while back my idle was to high and being the stupid new Jag owner/backyard mechanic I just gave the idle air adjustment a turn or two. Then I come to find out I had a vacume leak causing high idle. So I backed the screw back out a bit on another occasion.
I must have not been to far off because I never saw the car wander for it's idle to much until I read how the idle is supposed to work. Idle should increase when there is alternator or a/c load which it was not doing.
So after cleaning the IAC Valve I followed the instructions for setting the idle via spooling out the motor all the way etc. What I found is that my screw is 1/4 turn from all the way in and a cold start of the engine is now very rough and nasty while it wanders around. Once it adjusts itself it idles fine(still does not respond to load other than correcting idle back to spec).
I have checked for leaks everywhere I could find. I have new hoses for most of the intake and all are clamped tight and are in good condition. All of the vaccum lines seem to be fine and have no detectable leaks. The throttle body is set to .002" and throttle pot at .6v.
I feel like I have checked everything and I feel like I have probably overlooked something in one of my checks but am a bit at a loss.
Thanks for the help!

OK, in your 3rd paragraph you say "....... still does not repond to load other than correcting idle back to spec." This is what I believe it is supposed to do. Without that "correction" the idle would drop some 100rpm or so.
As for the cold start issues, no idea with an AJ6 engine. Spark plugs are a fairly common cold start item, as is coil and spark quality.
I have read somewhere at sometime that the HT lead from the coil to the cap can give grief.
