Post 1990 type Instrument Pack illumination lamps ?

I'm having trouble finding a source for the IP's filament lamps (warning or backlights).

The socket can be disassembled from the lamp, but I haven't found the correct lamp.

Anyone know of a part # and a retailer?

this is the wrong part

Default 1990 type Instrument Pack illumination lamp source

Here is a photo I made of a disassembled hazard/warning lamp. The clips just slide up and out
allowing the lamp to be removed.

Beside it is the lamp that the present day parts databases are claiming to be the replacement.

You can see it is too large, has wrong base, and the leads are not long enough.

Oubadah made a pretty detailed thread about what he did to his 95.

This might help you. Replacing Back Lights.

It's a good read anyhow, as you are interested in Auto Electronics.

Hi Richard,

I had searched and found Oubadah's excellent LED post earlier, but thanks for the link anyways. I just may
not have known about it.

For the instrument pack, this bulb type is known as a T-1 1/2

Default instrument cluster bulbs

Name: space.gif

Size: 77 BytesI just checked with one of my "old" ones and the lamps used to "backlight" the 1988-89 vfd Instrument Clusters are different; they use a much larger bulb.

Default Lamp filament T1,5 5mm wire ended (T-1 1/2)

I measured the resistance of one of my remaining good lamps and the meter read, about 10 ohms.

At 12V and if I'm doing the math correctly, these bad boys consume about 14 watts of power, each ?!

I've been looking for some kind of incandescent replacement on the Internet.

The closest I've come so far, is :

Lamp,filament,T1,5-5mm,min,wire ended,14V,37mA

(clickable thumbnail)

RS Stock No. 655-9592

Manufacturer's Specs:

Current Rating 37 mA
Diameter 5.1mm
Lamp Base Wire Terminal
Lamp Size T1 1/2
Length 13.2 mm
Lens Colour Clear
Life Hours 5000h
Luminosity 0.2 mscp
Voltage Rating 14 V

They come in a pkg of 10 for $4.00 (0.40 each)
  • The problem is they are "Temporarily out of stock, available for backorder".
  • At 37 ma (0.444 w), I won't know how bright they are until I try them out.
  • Also they will be shipped (if and when) from Australia. I have no problem with Australia but I just waited 6 weeks for a book to be delivered to my home from British Columbia (Canada).

LEDs are starting to look as a better alternative here in the States.
