Default Is J-Gate Supposed to Latch in Both "Drive" Positions? Illumination Bulb Question Too

Not sure if anyone has seen this thing, so I'm trying to find out how this should work in my car, which is a 1992 Jaguar Sovereign.

The shifter is fine In Park, Neutral, and down to Drive. When moving the lever to the Left, to the "Second" Drive position, it doesn't latch, and springs back to the Right-hand Drive position.

If I put the shifter in Position 3, or 2, it locks in fine, as it should.

Is this normal for this year? My 1996 XJ12 (with an almost identical J-Gate shifter) locks in both the right and left Drive position.

----------------

Also, does anyone know the Jaguar part number or comparable Sylvania, etc. bulb number for the Green/Blue tinted bulb that's in the holder for the J-Gate backlight illumination?

Thanks,
Nick

I would think its supposed to stay in either position. My 94 springs and holds left or right in drive and I would have to assume thats the way its supposed to work.

Okay, sounds like my J-Gate has a broken stop.

It's really too bad that it's on this car because the shift linkage on my '96 XJ12 needs to be adjusted, it's sloppy as heck. You can move the shifter slightly when it's in Reverse, and the Red indicator will turn off, and the reverse lights will go out, even though you're still reversing.

Not locking into the second Drive isn't a huge deal, but it's good to know that it's not working how it's supposed to. Maybe I can find a good used J-gate somewhere.

Thanks guys,
Nick

I literally drive mine like a standard. Always using the left side of the gate, I'm up and down the gears all the time!

Brakes last quite a while driving like this ..Jim (manwich66) doesn't agree though, says brakes are cheaper than trannies and while that may be true, the tranny in my 40 seems like it has lots of life left in it, last fluid change all was in fine shape....
