Hello Drazen,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.

You can find a lot of information about the XJ40 in the Jag-Lovers eBook, which you can visit at the link below. You may need to join the Jag-Lovers forum in order to access the information, but it's free:

Here's a list of some of the issues to look for on an XJ40. Hopefully other members will offer additional ideas:

Engine starts easily, idles smoothly and steadily at 750 rpm or lower, revs easily
All gauges and lights in the instrument cluster operate correctly
Transmission shifts smoothly
No whine or grinding from rear end of the car
Knocking sounds from any part of the suspension (perished shock bushings or suspension bushings)
Oil leak from cam cover gasket leaking oil onto the distributor and/or exhaust manifold (cam/valve cover gasket)
Play in steering (front wheel bearings, steering rack, worn suspension bushings)
Sagging headliner
Climate control system blows strong on both heat and cool settings and fans run at all three speeds
Rust, especially along the windshield and backlight seals and wheel arches, underbody
Signs that the car has been neglected (for example, the air filter, fluid levels and condition, cracked tires)
Any previous owner modifications (non-original wiring in the engine bay, etc.)

Check the Vehicle Condition Monitor for any stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). To do so:
1. Turn the key to position II (ON), but do not start the engine.
2. Press and release the VCM button on the trip computer to the right of the steering wheel.
3. Watch the small display window below the speedometer where the mileage reading/odometer normally appears. DTCs appear in the form of "FF" or "Fuel Fault" plus a two-digit number, such as "FF89," or "Fuel Fault 22." If any message appears, write it down exactly and post it here and we'll help.

Good luck, and please keep us informed!

Cheers,

Don

Welcome to the forum Drazen,

The problem with XJ40's in Northern Europe is RUST. Here is the bonnet of my XJ40 twenty years ago when it was eight years old:

It had to be replaced as did the boot lid.

If body parts are rotted, finding replacements will be difficult so you need to be certain they are repairable.

Graham
