Default Just picked up a 1991 Jag XJ6...what to do

Picked up an XJ6 lastnight for $250. It has a blown engine, back two doors don't work, and it was owned by a horder, so the inside is full of garbage. It has a 4.0 6 cyl that has a hole in the block and a rod let loose, so I'm guessing the head is smashed also. The underside of this car is nice looking. It does have a lot of new parts on it.
Is it worth fixing?
Should I part it out?
Worth anything in parts?

it's not a "classic", but it's a Jaguar, so if you invest in a replacement engine and get it running and clean it good, you might recover your investment.

Firstly, you are NEW, so welcome to our side.

What you have is known in Jag world as an XJ40 series. I would suggest going to the "new member area" and introducing yourself, and also I strongly suggest reposting this in the XJ40 area.

Answering your questions in my opinion:
Any Jag is worth fixing, but that depends on your LOVE for the machine.
Part it out, well that is purely your call.
Always people looking for GOOD parts, so, if you have the time, space, mental toughness, go for it.

Thanks Grant Francis. I actually know nothing about this machine. I'm a VW/audi guy normally. I'll go intro myself after work and then make a post in the xj40's and include pics!

HA, VW/Audi, fair dinkum, that Jag would be a quantum leap by comparison.

My opinion only of course.

Send for the climbing ropes and crampons - the learning curve just took a turn upwards!

Good luck whichever way you choose between repair or part out.

If the body is in good condition (no rust) and the interior (after cleaning it out) then get a haynes manual. Go to a salvage yard and get a used motor and maybe a tranny (after you read the manual youl see why the unit is easier to swap together) make sure that it runs has no noises or leaks and good oil preasure. Then swap motors. As for the rear doors either the electric locking units are not working (or are stuck) or the outside door handles are broken (pot metal) or the cables from the inside are broken,or the child safety levers are in the locked position (or a combination of all three problems. Most likely it the locking unit to get to that remove the arm reat than the wood panel, then the inner sill, then the plastic cover below the lock button, spray with wd40 or similar lower the window and pull the button up(it take a lot of force to get it up as it most likely is corroded insde) then with it lifted open the door with either the outside or insde handles. The headliner will also need to be re bonded as they all fall down after 10 to 12 years. If there are too many issues part it out.

Forgot to mention on the rear doors that befor going to the trouble od taking them apart try to pull the locking knobs up as the electric may not be lifting them.

I live in too poor of an area to find a jag in a junk yard. To get me an engine and basically fix everything it needs I could almost buy a nice jag off of here. So I guess I'll be parting it out...

Ryansmagic:
Sorry to hear you couldn't find an engine; but you are probably right - this will make a good donor car. If you list things, perhaps on ebay or likewise, you will certainly make back your $250 dollars. Otherwise, you might also consider selling it to one of the scrapyards in the area. I noticed your 715 area code, and having grown up in Wausau, I can recommend Cousineau Auto Parts - who might give you a price.
cheers!
Scott

Thanks scott, I actually scrap a few cars a year, and I take all of mine to Wellers. As for a list of parts, as of right now, everything is there, if its broken or not thats another story. Need something? I plan on taking out the cores on Sun, draining the fuel out and throwing away a few garbage bags of trash.

Hi Ryan,
it appears as though its a Vanden Plas (by the wheel covers)
Can you tell me if the rear tail light lenses are a smoke color or red? Do they have a chrome strip around them?
If they are smoke colored and have no cracks, I would be interested.
Please let me know, thanx!
