Default New Cheap Brake Accumulators!

Hi all, I recently took a gamble and ordered a GM part 25676065 brake accumulator. This is not the Buick Reatta one. These were ONLY for right hand drive 1999-2001 Cadillac Limousines and Hearses. The part is discontinued but given the narrow number of these still in service theres a surplus and they are still available for order. Mine was $87. It's slightly larger than the original but bears all the same yellow markings, screws in directly, and most importantly, works!

jfleming,

That's really terrific news! Is the accumulator you bought marked with a pressure rating?

Cheers,

Don

The 3.6 ltr. and 4.0 ltr. had a lot of GM influence with brakes and A/C units. Seems the computers were derived from GM too. A lot of interchanges between the two manufacturers. But, then Ford wound up buying them.

Yes it is, 210 BAR just like the original however it is bigger so this may affect the system. I will say that I only get about 6-7 pedal applications before the pump kicks on, as opposed to the 9 I hear I should be getting. However my old accumulator did 1-2 pumps so its definitely improvement for me.
This may not be the fault of the accumulator either, the color of my brake fluid suggests a well needed flush may get me up to 9.

Good information. Part number 25676065 isn't discontinued by the way, any GM parts department can order that (showing stock in Michigan). You got a good price though, list price is $133.76 (heads up to others).

The dealership I ordered from told me it was discontinued, and was being sold from surplus stock. Also, if you just drop that PN in a google search you'll find a pile of gm dealerships to order from, and most are under $100

Hi Kay, from where did you find one at a reasonable cost, and how much? I've had a hard time finding any under several hundred dollars. The best I've found so far is an unbranded aftermarket accumulator for $200.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of this other GM part number. I had been chasing the Reatta accumulator which is either NLA or very expensive, and which I was referring to. So that's great news and will save me a bundle.

Hey Folks,
when you change the pressure ball is there a set procedure?
do you need to bleed the brakes after?

thanks, Dave

Hi Dave,

The procedure for replacing the accumulator sphere differs according to model year, but the most important thing is to depressurize the system first. The instructions are in the Power Hydraulic System Manual, which I am attaching.

Cheers,

Don

I've changed two pressure ***** in my day. The procedure I remember and used: with the ignition OFF, pump the brake pedal at least 20 times until it gets hard.
Cover the ball with shop towel/s and remove.
IF you can get the pressure ball off without removing the pump you should not have to bleed the brakes. If you have to remove the pump you will have to bleed the brakes.
My '95 XJS I did not have to remove the pump nor bleed the brakes.
My '90 Majestic I had to remove and bleed, other than time, not difficult.
The difference is the mount for the pump on the XJ40.

Thanks Roger95.

Here is another Q,
I was thinking of rebuilding both components of the system, the accumulator and the actuator [ master cylinder ].
would it be easier to find used parts and rebuild them then do a swap-out?
I have notice factory rebuilt parts are very expensive. IF you can find them.

Thanks, Dave

Hi Dave,

As far as I know, parts for rebuilding the power hydraulic system are not available to the DIY market. Also, considering that the system operates at pressures between 1,200 and 1,450 psi, rebuilding any of the components is probably best left to specialists. I know there are companies that rebuild the older style Citroën and Rolls Royce accumulators. You might check the thread at the link below for any additional information:

Cheers,

Thanks Don.
my brakes work ok, nothing compared to my wife's crown vic though.
I was just wondering what people do since these Jags do not use a regular master and you really cannot get the parts at the local auto store.
I did find a few rebuilt units online for $$$
some day I would like to bring the system back to factory new operation.

Dave

I just ordered one of these GM part 25676065 brake accumulators, total cost including shipping was about $103.

I'll let everyone know how it works out, and if it eliminates my ABS warning light on initial brake pedal depress.
