Welcome, the reason why I waited so long for '93 and 94 was to have bought a less problematic model year or more reliable Jaguar XJ40 in a sense . Still, I am having some electrical glitches .
As for mechanical point of view I find the Jaguars (namely late XJ40s ) pretty solid . Money pit ? If maintained well I don't think you would feel upset or regret .
Your Jaguar surely would attract many people over your two Teutonics

At 18, if you can afford to own and run an MB S500 and a BM 740 i with your own money, I wouldn't worry too much about the cost of the Jag.

Well maintained they are as reliable as anything else on the whole, but when things go wrong, parts are of course not cheap.

With three cars your mileage will at least be low, and you will always have a spare car for backup.

Second what Translator said. If you can afford a Beemer AND a Mercedes, cost should be of little concern.

Our beloved Jags are not the easiest to work on (unless you've got an early model...like me...lol), but you'll learn a lot once you start working on them.
