Default New to the Jaguar world. 1989 XJ6

Hello group.

I just picked up a 1989 XJ6. I know nothing about the Jaguar but I do enjoy working on car. I think I got a good deal on the car being I traded it for a dirtbike. So I am into this car for about 700 bucks.

Seems the car has been garage kept, and taken car of. High miles, 200k. The electronics are working, (dash, locks, windows, lights, etc)

I do need to figure out a few issues it has. The car surges over 60mph. But only over that speed. Shifts great, sounds good. Even takes you up to 100mph if you get in it hard with no surging or other issues. But if you cruse at a speed over 60mph and just try to say hold it at 65 it surges a little.

I have not had a chance to look at the plugs, cap, rotor etc yet. Or change fuel filters, or look into vacuum lines. Just got it last night. But that will be on the to do list.

Just thought I would say hello, and read the forum a bit and see what I can learn on here.

The railroad has called. Off to work I go.

Sorry for the really BIG photos.. Have not figured out how to resize them on the forum yet.

Default Nice....

Sweet looking Jag, I love those early round head lights and White looks right on that car. How ever you're in the incorrect forum. Although your car is an XJ6 it's not a Series 1,2 or 3... its called an XJ40. Head over there because they can be more help.

Ah, much to learn about the car.

Could a mod, maybe move the thread?

Will check back soon. Off to Fresno on a train,

your car is unofficially known as a "Series 4 XJ-6", but the Model is XJ-40.

1989 was the second year of the "digital Jaguar" in the USA market, (and the year Ford "invested" in Jaguar Cars). According to Jaguar World Magazine, they started building XJ-40 in 1983, but those early XJ-40 were made for the European market only, not exported.

Welcome to the forum KC7STW,

I've moved your other identical thread from XJ6 Series I, II & III forum over here to XJ40 forum and merged the two threads.

Your XJ40 looks in good condition.

When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see.

In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Graham

Welcome to the forum.

The car looks really nice, always wanted a white one in this MY. Don't be bashful, there are many things to tell you, but it's best you start posing questions and we'll take them one at a time.

I used to live in Fresno, my vehicle is from Southern California.

Welcome to the forum KC7STW,
You are in the right section now and it is a pleasure to have you here.
As a recent Jag owner you will indeed have many questions and you will find the right people here to help.

Everyone here is very friendly and as a group extremely knowledgeable...
You are lucky to have chosen a model that has been around for a long time and has lots of info and experienced people to help.

Congrats on the purchase... I am sure you will come to love her as much as we all love our own.... there really is something special about Jags.

Thanks for the warm welcomes...

At this time. I have just about every code cleared from the display.. Now I am working on the Check Eng 6 code. (hope that is not a bad one) Going to do some reading on that code..

As for the rest of the codes, and little problems. They were all simple fixes, and your normal maintenance stuff. Like who knew keeping the power steering lines tight would stop the leak.

The strangest one tho was Hydraulic Mineral Oil.. Now that is a new one to me.

I can't wait to get the car over to my fathers and get her on the car lift. Need to check fluids, and change/grease the rear, and drive line..

Hi again... not sure if by "strangest one" means that it is just something new to you or if you are not sure what it is for.

the Hydraulics are there for the SLS (self Levelling Suspension) if you have this fitted..... from memory the 88 & 89 had this.
mine certainly did..... these caused a lot of trouble and for the most part was replaced with conventional shocks.

It has a pump on the front of your motor which drives the hydraulic system and also taps into the braking system in lou of of the conventional vacuum booster.

I am still only just learning about this aspect myself..... someone else would probably be able to explain it better.

I have every intention of replacing the whole hydraulic system with a standard vacuum booster. Just another thing on my to-do list.

The only errors I now have coming up on my vcm are those related to the hydraulic system.... ie: low pressure and fluid low.... these will be remedied with the conversion.
The only other error is the coolant level low..... I need to replace the expansion tank sender unit.

We look forward to hearing and seeing more of your progress
Keep us informed
