I would never buy such a great mileage car to be frankly . My best suggestion to you is that find a local Jag Specialist and have it checked asap. I hate to say butthis car might a trouble bag for ya .I bet if you take it to the Jag Dealer they will most likely say you " sir, don't deal with this car let's give you a brand new Jag "
Still, what you told can get it sorted out but quite money .You should also check out under trunk carpet .Some corrosion and deep rust can be elsewhere and that's really a nasty issue

Most of these could be minor. The most expensive sounds like the power seats. The lightening bolt is probably related to the circuit failure 1 and 2. You have a fuse out. Wiper problem is the park switch. Check the coolant and brake pads. Got more work to do there.

Is it worth it? That depends on you. If it's what you want, it's worth it.

Welcome to the "club". I bought my first 1990 XJ6 in Dec.06 at a web auction with 250000km. Had I known what I was in for, I would not had bought this "baby". It looked good on pictures but that is where it ends.
After taking possession of the car, I needed to replace the battery and the alternator, just to get it "going".
I drove the car for 7 hours to my home with an escort, no problems. Since my nearest Jag dealer is many hours from were I live, I took it to a local garage to have it certified. The mechanic had some Jag experience and replaced the hand brake cable, front rotors and brake pads. Now the "fun" begun. Most of all the problems are all electrical related and there are plenty (too many to name here) of "problems". I am commited to restore this one and have replaced already many items, from door handles, sensors, cpu's, etc, etc, and I still have a way to go. So, unless the car has an overall good body and is in good mechanical condition I would not advise anybody to buy one of these older luxery cars. I personally like the over-egineering of these older cars and to me, it's a challenge to restore one of these "beauties" since I have a background in the automotive trade, I am in my sixties and semi-retired.

I bought my 1993 with over 200,000 kms on it and there's really no reason for the car not to go at least another 200,000 or more. What you need to do before you do anything else, is get yourself a CD rom copy of the service and parts manual. That way you can likely take your old cat to any competent service shop and they can have all the info they need to problem solve what sounds like a few minor electrical and door adjustment problems at best. Any body shop can fix your door concerns with little cost or time involved. It's easy to get frustrated and think you were wrong to buy a cat... when right off the start you have these annoying problems. Be patient, and hang inthere. Budget what you want to spend on fixes, and if it gets too high, sell the cat, Jags are high maintainance but with proper care, very long lived and reliable cars. In my humble opinion, noone ever sells a good car so you might've anticipated a few minor repairs to get your kitty looking and working as it should. Since buying my cat I've invested around $500.00 or so including a new cat for the hood where it was missing. I fully expect to spend from $500.00 to a $1000.00 anually on repairs, and if something major comes up, I'll decide where I want to go from there. For example if my cat coughed up a hairball and needed an engine, while otherwise great,I'd likely do it.You can always get a new jag, but the older cats have a mystique about themthat is sadly lacking in the newer models. Ken is a huge resource for Jag stuff, and you'll find the rest of us will do what we can to help you. Feel free to PM me anytime you want to talk about old cat ownership. Take my advice get theservice and parts CD. Well worth it and with it in hand, any good shop should be able to care for your kitty. They are really straight forward if somewhat typically britsh... over designed and as a result seemingly complicated. The later XJ40's were excellent cars with the full nine lives. Be patient and enjoy! There's nothing like being a Jag person...

Jaguars are an excellent value for those awnting a high end luxury exotic at a reasonable price. Partly due to the years of urban legends and bad uneducated press they sell for a steal. Most are good solid cars, but you need to take the same precautions when purchasing any used car. In the XJ40 series I'd avoid those prior to 1990, and even then you need to remember they got bettter and better until 1993 when almost all of the problems experienced by previous years were for the most part, non-existent. THe 1992 & 1994's are hallmark cars, reliable and almost bullet proof, does this mean nothing ever goes wrong with them? No they are after all pushing 14 years old with most at well over 200,000 onthe clock, so we need to keep that in perspective. Am I sorry for my purchase? Not, Would I sell my cat? Not bloody likely! But then one day that sweet used XK8 Coupe I'm wanting will appear at mydealer and it will be time to pass on my XJ to a worthy soul. That or I'll just keep the damn thing... After allonly thing better than a Cat in the garage, is two!!!

Ahh, There are mysteries best left alone when dealing with Jaguars... I've had strange things happen and then dissappear. I've learned to let them become steady problems until I need to address them or I'd go crazy. A few weeks ago, I was unable to unlock the doors as it simply relocked the minute I unlocked the car. I unlocked it through the passenger side and it unlocked and stayed that way no problem, since that occurance everything works fine. Weird, but true. Jaguars have their own odd ways, one simply gets used to them or not. I think that bit of the supernatural is why we love em... or hate em. Seems no one is on the fence when it comes to things Jaguar.

Like Ken said, if it's what you want it's worth it. I bought mine with 153000 miles, flawless at the time, interior and exterior, the previous owner only took it to the dealership for any repairs. Everything was working great, I feel in love with the car. All that greatness went down the drain when I rear-ended an old Chevy truck. I was surprised, I destroyed that truck and still pushed that one into another truck in fron of it. Yes, I was speeding. I chose to keep that car still, and repair it. In comparison to the truck I hit, even the other one, my damage was minimal, I felt I was driving a tank. haha. From the radiator on, the hood, both fenders, needed replacement, I saw it as cosmetic repairs. Engine was great, no mialignment from the rest of the car's frame. I proceeded to buy another cat, a 1989 XJ6, not Vanden Plas, that bearly ran for 900 bucks. Took those parts to put into mine. Car ran great. As normal. Then started the complications everyone always complains for this series. Not sure if it was because of the accident, it's age, or both. Got a cheap paint job, which I regret terribly, for 600. First the radiator, ended up putting a new one. Then engine leaks, the whole engine got serviced while overseas, along with small things, that was about 3,000. Little things here and there, that add up, since parts for this car are so expensive sometimes. Seriously concerned, my father asked how much money have I put into this car, including everything, initial buy, other car, casmetic parts I buy, all of it. I came up with about 10,000. Silly? It may be for some, but this car is what I love. That's in a period of 4 yrs. I may buy something cheaper to drive, a truck maybe, but keep working on the cat. It always has plenty to work on. Now, in the next 2 weeks or so, I'm going to drop 2,700 on a good paint good. Oh, one more thing, I drive a lot, so my car has many miles, in the process of everything I replaced my instrument cluster once, and it got reseted to 0 somehow one time it was serviced. My odometer currently reads about 14,000 miles, but putting all the previous miles and from the date it got reseted, I say its at 201,000 miles. Runs great.

I have no clue. I can maybe ask the shop where it happened. I've tried my best to keep track of original miles, for my knowledge, they told me there's no other way of getting original miles other than the odometer. Or is there? I replaced my instrument cluster that read about 170,000 at the time with one that read 92,000. Drove it for a while, serviced it and got reseted, it now reads 14,000. My best guess is 201,000 since I never documented the changes. I hear reseting the odometer is illegal. I also hear its not, as long as you document it. They state if you reset it you must document that, and if you ever sell the car you have to state clearly on the papers that the original one was replaced and reset, and mark the original mileage and then whatever is currently used. I'd recommend checking with the local DMV, or whatever similar flavour of vehicle licensing bureau exists in your area. I'm sure car insurance is heavily involved with this kind a thing.
