When it comes to engine oil, you will get all kinds of advice and opinion on brand / grade / change frequency.

Going with what the Jaguar Dealer has told you is a safe choice.

You are going to get bombarded with opinions.

The owners handbook gives a spec, and a viscosity for your area/market. That will also give a spec such as SF. SG etc. That is all old school spec these days, so the latest mineral is a SM down here, with Synthetic sitting on SN.

Being an AJ6 spec engine I would be 5W50 Synthetic, or a 10W40 mineral.

The Jag dealer 5W30 is a tad light in MY OPINION, and more suited to the AJV8.

My uses are:

AJ16 10W30 all year (202000kms)
S Type V6 5W40 all year (120000kms)
V12 HE 10W40 all year (252000kms
MK10 3.8ltr 20W50 whenever (523000kms)

+1

Also be aware that if the source of the information was not actually one of the techs, and if the exact vehicle was not mentioned, then answer may be completely from left field.

If you have a manual and it gives a spec, that is the safest way to go.

Castrol has a synthetic 5W50.

As for say, SJ spec oil, US market Shell Rotella 15W40 is still SJ and a nice oil. There is a companion Shell Rotella T6 synthetic 5W40.

Cheap, widely available and good quality.

My owners manual calls for 10w30 as preferred, but 10w40 is acceptable for hotter climes. Since my XJ6 has 150,000 miles on it I tend to use something a little thicker 15w40 and might used 20-50 come summer if it starts consuming in the high heat.
