Okay so I’m in process of rebuilding my cassette stereo for my 1993 Jaguar XJ6. While I wait on the new drive belt to come, I decided to pull my door panel to check out my speakers.. especially since they just up and quit on me. Well they are still the original Philips made in Belgium 🇧🇪!!
My question is do I order the replacement OEM speakers from Welsh or do I go aftermarket. I want to stick with OEM but a con was brought to my attention when my resident Jag guy brought up how they could be brittle from sitting and quality might basically be the same. I attached pictures of the speaker I just pulled from my passenger door.
Most of us have gone with newer aftermarket speakers - you may find that you can fit larger speakers which may help improve the low midrange response. The foam surrounds deteriorate with age, so I agree with your friend that purchasing New Old Stock OEM speakers is ill advised, especially since the original speakers weren't that great to begin with. I purchased both of my XJ40s when they were about 5 years old, so the speakers had not yet deteriorated, and they were very average sounding, even for their day.
Search the forum for what others have purchased. I think some of our members have managed to fit good-quality 5-1/4 or maybe even 6-1/2 inch speakers in their doors. Some members have also found ways to install aftermarket head units, though I never found that necessary.
