rear hub nut thread pitch
Hey all, I have another "what is he Doing Now?" question. I have deduced that I have at least 3 of 8 half shaft u joints going bad between my xj40s. I have ordered the new joints and am anticipating a day long project each. I also have researched the hub nut on the axle #JZN100035 but find myself hesitant to pay the $32 to $60 each for them, so my question then is this: Does anyone know the thread pitch on these nuts so that I can check my hardware store for an appropriate (and hopefully much less expensive) lock nut? Thanks
Hi Jerry,
I do not know the thread of the axle shafts and nuts, but it shouldn't be difficult to determine by measuring. Bear in mind that it may be an SAE/Imperial thread since the same nut was used on the XJ-S beginning in 1975 (I'm currently working on a '73 E-Type and all the fasteners are SAE/Imperial). I seem to recall that Jaguar may have sourced the axles & U-joints from General Motors or one of their suppliers, but I may be wrong.
One possible source of the coil insert lock nuts is Gripcoil. Once you know the thread you need, you might contact them to see if they can supply the nuts in small quantities:
Gripcoil Lock Nuts
One thing I've noticed over the years is that the manufacturers of this style of lock nut all claim that one of the benefits of the coil insert is that the lock nut can be "re-used repeatedly." But once you take off one of your rear axle nuts and inspect the coil insert, you'll see that the +/- 230 ft. lbs. of torque that Jaguar specifies completely deforms the coil insert, so re-use is ill-advised. At least two members of the Jag-Lovers forum re-used their nuts and later reported that the nuts had come loose while they were driving their car!
Cheers,
Don
