Help! Xj-8 rear hub nut problem
Help!
I removed the bubcaps on my '98 XJ-8 in order remove the pesky locking wheel nuts - and the nut and cone just fell out! It was in the hubcap. What I have is a castelated nut, but no sign of a hole for a split pin.
Does anyoneone have a picture, drawing or information on this? I am scared to drive the car until the problem is fixed, as the wheel might fall off.
Thanks
Charles

No help in the Alldata picture of the rear brake assembly. You should probably wait for a more expert opinion than mine, but I would bet the hole is there, but the hub assembly is covering it. Sounds like the nut backed off, and the whole deal shifted outward. If it were me, I would start taking it apart until I figured out what happened. I, too, would not drive it until I knew what the story was.

Charles,
There is a beveled washer and a nut with a locking thread insert that holds the rear hub assembly onto your car, by threading onto the outer end of the halfshaft.
These locking nuts are not intended for re-use, and often the thread insert wil come out of the nut and render it useless. So someone who was previously working on your car found that he could not re-use the nut: he scouted around his shop and found that a castle nut from an earlier model Jaguar was the same size and thread, so that's what you got.
Do not drive your car until you have a beveled washer and nut on the end of your halfshaft to retain the hub. You can temporarily fit the castle nut and torque it to 175 ft. lbs., and order the proper locknut for immediate installation. Check the other rear hub while you were at it.

Thanks very much indeed! That goes along with my feelings too. Some gorilla previously owned this car and did no good to the wheel nuts, hub nuts and I don't know what else. I have found the proper hub nuts on Internet here in UK, as well as whole reconditioning kits. Not expensive. I will phone in the morning.
I'll also phone my brother in Australia late tonight, he worked on Jags for many years and owned a few. I'll phone him after I phone my wife who is in Akron this weekend - talk about one side of the world to the other.
Do you know what size the hub nuts are? I measure 29mm - one of my sons will buy one on his way to work in the morning and drop it off with me
Thanks again
Charles
