Default Rear shocks for 1994 XJ81

Hello, I'm working on a 94 XJ12 and looking for some input on the rear shocks. It's already had the sls replaced with standard suspension by a previous owner. The lower bushings on the existing rear shocks are shot. It's a non-sportspack version, and build date of 2/93, vin ending 682xxx, so it does not have the x300 style rear suspension style that the very late XJ40s had.

I purchased the Sachs shocks identified in their catalog as proper for the 1994 XJ12, part number 230-110, but I don't think they are the rights ones for my car after looking at the lower bushing.

I've attached a couple of photos of the existing rear shock, and of the lower bushing on the new Sachs shock. Are these new Sachs shocks clearly for the x300 style rear suspension or am I wrong? If this is the wrong one, I guess i'll swap them for the 170-122 Sachs version? I think part of the confusion comes from all XJ12 models in the US being identified as 1994 regardless of build date.

Thanks for any input.

You can never really go by the year with these cars, only the VIN.

From the VIN, get the part number at the JHT website:

https://www.jaguarclassicparts.com/u...nd-spring-rear

looks like cars pre VIN 696460 need Jaguar part number

CCC6923

If you then google the part number, a bunch of sites will pop up.

Here's a pair of Boge's on ebay, notice the "collar" on the lower body - this is what you need. The ones that you illustrate have no collar and are designed for some other application.

BTW, the long-ish lower bushings on your Sachs shocks look quite a bit different to the bushings on the Bilsteins I fitted to my late 40, but they may ok I suppose ..don't know. They don't look like the old ones I took off either - an improvement possibly?

Anyway, the wrong ones for your car. Take them back if you can.

I think the SACHS 170122 are the right Sachs ones for your car (according to RockAuto) but double-check eh?

Larry,

Thanks for your help. I ordered the shocks from RockAuto and their site lists the Sachs 230-110 as the proper rear shocks for a 1994 XJ12. It's not broken down by VIN range though on their site, only model year, which probably led to the problem. The Sachs 170-122 is listed on their site as proper for a 1994 XJ6. Entering the CCC6923 on Rockauto's site only brings up the Monroe brand shocks.

I will plan to send the rear ones back. If I exchange for the 170-122 should I be concerned about using the same rear shocks Sachs makes for the XJ6? I can understand the front shocks being different for the I6 and v12 models due to the weight difference. I could also just order some boge as you noted.

If you check the parts listings site in the UK that I posted earlier you can check if the rears are the same for the 6 and 12's ......I believe they are.

I believe the Boge 46-055 is the same as the Sachs 170-122 and for your VIN either one of these are what you should fit. (I bought Bilsteins for my late VDP)

The Sachs you have ATM are for the later X300 style rear suspensions, the lower bushing won't fit your car, different diameter bolt.

Cheers

Larry
