Hey everyone, I have decided to replace the speakers and the headunit in the 88' xj40. At the moment it has everything stock from 1988 so it sounds absolutely awful.
I'm completely lost with the sizes of the speakers and what are good brands to buy etc. I also need to replace the 2 subwoofer speakers that are under the back seat.
If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated! Thanks again!

 

The rear under seat speakers are 5"s
The door cards are all 4"s
When replacing the head unit you MUST rewire either the front or rear speakers as they use a common ground and you run the risk of blowing your unit. I recently did an entire swap in my 92 Xj40. I would suggest pioneers or jvc seem to have a bit more bass. I would also suggest while youve got your door cards off to tape up the many holes on the door to prevent noise loss.

What I did for my system was rewire the rear doors and seat speakers to a 4channel amp under the drivers seat. If your seats arent electric you will have more space for an amp but choose carefully! The space is pretty limited. I wired the front speakers straight to the head unit and the amp rca cables through the bottom of the centre console and out the side. Pretty inconspicuous and easy to access. All the other cables were pretty much wired next to the originals. Can send you all my diagrams and videos of what I did. Its pretty time consuming to do it right but its very easy. Hope this helps and saves you all the time I wasted looking for help!
