Default shifter and speedo problems

I have the car running actually for the first time took it for a "long" ride (1 mile or so) lol hey that mile sure felt good inside this car anyway new problems are found the sifter doesnt have like a safety mechanism, the car will start on any gear, also on the speedo the gear part stays on P

number one question would be should i get a new shifter? or is there anything i could replace to make this one work? about the speedo there is a couple things also not workin, ie the part where as seen in some pics shows wether or not u have seatbelt on is cmpletely busted doesnt light up at all. so needles to say i will replace, should i go with the digital one or analog?? thanks to all who contributed to getting this car running for now anyways lol

1 mile, damn my driveway is that long, sorry could not resist that one, ENJOY.

There is NO going back now I hope you realise. I did that "first drive" in 1968 in a MK7m Jaguar, and have had NO other car except Jaguar since then.

OK, Jaguar content.

Remove the ski-slope, look on the RH side of the gear selector assembly, and you will see a "switch pack", also called a linear switch. It has the contacts inside for the dash indicator, and the neutral start feature. There is a small PEG from the actual gearlever that engages and moves the "slide" section of that switch so as to indicate the gear you are in on the dash panel, and also apply the section that inhibits/allows starting.

It sounds daunting, it is NOT.

Remove the 2 (I think) screws that secure it to the bracket, unplug the electrical section, give it a good clean with contact cleaner (NOT carby cleaner), and simple look at the operation of it, it is SIMPLE, and ensure that the peg is correctly engaged when refitting the switch. It is adjustable (to a point) and you MUST ensure that the "D" lights up on the dash when in "D" or the cruise control will not work, mmmm.

Forgot something, I do that.

It might pay to include what year and model your "pride and joy" is.

I am assuming an early XJ40, pre 1991 for example.

It just makes answering easier when the actual car involved is spelled out in the post.
