Default Steering Gear

I have a bit of a squeaky problem. The noise comes from the front driver side. When ever someone gets on or off, I go over bumps, or simply driving from stopping and going, will make the noise. At first I thought it would be the road spring, or even the damper. When I got under the car, and had someone move the car around, the noise seems to come from the steering gear. It's a rod that attaches to the wheel, to a spring (which is where the squeak seems to come from) to the vehicle. If this is the case, is this a simple replacement? How about just greasing the spring? Or is the squeak a sign of needed replacement?

I'm not sure what you mean by " connected to a spring, to the vehicle". perhaps you could post a picture of the suspect
