Default Sunroof issue- 1991 XJ6 Sovereign

Even though it's Winter in the Northeast, I prefer to drive with the sunroof open on sunny days. My sunroof module assembly # DBC4372XE (I believe that is the correct # for my model/year) won't engage. I've been told by my mechanic that the entire map light/roof console unit needs to be replaced, not just the switch module.

My questioning starts with....

Do I need the entire console or can I remove and replace just the switch module? I am not talking about the large, yellow, circular end the switch module plugs into, but rather the switch/control that opens/closes the sunroof. I haven't been able to figure out how the switch/control can be removed from the entire console unit without doing either damage.

Any idea where the manual "emergency key" for the sunroof is located? I 'll hand-crank the roof until I can get it fixed. Closing it is not an issue (my central locking system on the center console, and my door locking system will close it without issue), it's just getting the darn thing open.

Any help is appreciated. It's another sunny day and sure would like to let it shine on the top of my head.

You can test that switch with a volt meter, and you can get to it by lowering that dome unit. Once you lower it you can see everything up there pretty clearly. As far as the "key" goes, maybe its in your glove compartment, or under a seat? The haynes manual shows how to use it.

I'm having a similar problem with my '94. The key on my car is located in a clip inside the dome unit. Look closely, its kind of hard to spot in mine, just might be there in yours (not sure, different year) but take a look.

Good luck!

My baby is a 1990 XJ6 Sovereign and, as malibudav says above, the key to the sunroof on my car is secured inside the dome unit by a clip.

My key was there as well.

But, I don't have a sun roof.

Go figure?

Too funny! Sounds like you can sell that key if cmcsparren can't find his!
