Default True Mileage

Is there a way to find my car's true mileage?Besides using the electronic odometer. I'm always asked when I take it in for servicing, and just say it has about 200,000 miles. I should have written these numbers down, but never did, and its always an estimate: I bought the car with about 156,000. The last reading I remember was aroung 170,000. Then I replaced the intrument panel, which read 89,000. The highest it went on there was to I believe 101,000. This last time I serviced the whole car, somehow, the odometer was reseted. So now I'm at 10,000 or so. I might be missing another reset at an earliear time. Am I just out of luck as to how many miles my car really has? And must keep guessing for the ends of time? Or is there another alternative to find it? Please help.

UPDATE 07/27/08:
Previous message was an old post, and since then I haven't been able to find my real mileage. Well, I did, after hours and hours of following paper trails from my DMV, serviving, etc,and with the help of subtraction and addition I found it. I'm closer to 205,000. Now, is there a way to change my odometer? I understand it's illegal, but I intend to change it to my corrrect mileage of 205,000. It bugs me too much that my car is an 1989 with only 20,000. Unheard of.

Unless you replace your PCM , even when you replace your odometers PCM should give you the correct and true mileage .

Not exactly sure what the PCM is, or where it lies in the car. I replaced the entire intrument cluster. Or the instrument display module DBC 2327, I think.

PCM is Powertrain Control Module . I dare say it is also called ECU .I don't know where it is for sure because there is no a standard displacement for it .So,each car manufacturers canlocate it differently .

ECU, that I know, Electronic Control Unit. Then I must get that checked out, I know mine has three ECU's and one microprocesor. I don't think any are within the instrument cluster I could be wrong. Maybe there's a way to reset the system to bring it up again, I dont know.

The instrument cluster holds the mileage on the XJ40 models. I will find out about resetting them. I know they can be set to zero, but I don't know about specific mileage.
