Default VCM Code

91' XJ40 is stalling and going into limp mode every time I start it. Getting this message on my VCM: HLCb5.0 (or something like this). Anyone know what this could be?

Disconnecting the battery for a few seconds and reconnecting it helped for a while, but no more..

I'm not familiar with that as a "code" for the OBD1 system. It should be something like ff46. Has your car been extremely wet or gotten zapped somehow? I wish I knew.

You might try disconnecting both cables and touching them together for 30 seconds or more. This should clear memories in the computer of any "bad dreams" it had. I had to use a jumper cable to do mine. Just FYI.

Hi Jagbro,

Jerry's suggestion of a hard reset may help. Be sure to disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery before you use a jumper cable to connect it to the positive battery cable for at least 2 minutes. Then reconnect the battery and see where you stand.

Check the fuses related to the instrument cluster - one may have been blown.

The message from your VCM is implausible, perhaps due to low battery voltage, a voltage issue to the instrument cluster, or corruption of one or more electronic control units.

Cheers,

Don
