Default vin NUMBER ERROR

Hello All, I am just inquiring if anyone has found their Jaguar VIN number does not match the details on the under hood compliance plate and under windscreen. Mine is a 1993 XJ40 4.0 SAJJHALD3AT659956 When decoded it comes up as 2010 with decode error. Did Jaguar get the VIN system wrong ? This vehicle has not been re manufactured.

I would be interested to hear if they got the VIN system wrong or has the VIN number system changed ?

Stay COVID19 Safe, Regards from Rodoz

Almost certainly nothing to be concerned over.

Over the years the world has seen a few different VIN formats.

There are lots of VIN decoders out there, many of them programmed to decode USA/North American formatted VIN numbers. You've probably stumbled onto one of those.

Try some different decoders. Or someone here with a factory service manual will come along and decode it for you

Cheers

It decodes correctly with the Jaguar decode table from JEPC (Jaguar Electronic Parts Catalogue) apart from the Emission Control System:

However, the full VIN does return invalid in the Jaguar Dealer TOPIx system:

I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you are concerned the vehicle has been cloned.

Thank you Graham and Doug for your response and information. I dobt the vehicle has been cloned . None of the dozens of Vin decoders I tried , were able to fully decode SAJJHALD3AT659956. All of them returned a Vin number error message. Even on Grahams table it does not accurately define the year. The chassis build tag indicates 92 and compliance plate 03/93 when vehicle was completed. Were the first XJ40's 92 ? I dont know.

Anyway time will tell, thanks for your contributions.

Regards Rodoz

The earliest production XJ40s were built late in calendar year 1986; considered 1987 "model year" by most. But, model year designations can get a little weird with cars sold worldwide, as different countries/markets have different ways of treating/interpreting that designation.

My Xjs has a different vin stamped into the top of the cowl than the one in the window (and everywhere else on the car.) If I recall, there was a thread about that describing who used it and why. Try searching the xjs section, although I honestly dont remember where I read that.
Sorry, I just had to muddy the water.......

The cowl VIN is the one your XJS was born with, so to speak. On cars headed to the USA (and perhaps Canada?) Jaguar added a second VIN that meets USA requirements.

I've heard, but not confirmed, that Japan, too, has specific VIN requirements. There are probably others as well.

Cheers

If your electrical plugs are big and "cylindrical" rather than small and "cuboid" you have a 92

Good morning Larry, thank you for your message,. Yes the bulk of my electrical connectors are the larger cylindrical type so mine is most likely a 92 even though the aluminium compliance plate under the hood says 03/93 . Thank you for the tip.
