Default What is this button for?

Button located under the gear shift with "S N X" which denote 3 different positions. Dash lights up "Sport" when you push "S". Dash lights up "X" when "X" is pushed and nothing happens with the "N" that I am noticing. I assume the "S" will increase the rpm. However, I have no idea about the other two.

Appreciate any help.

Those are tranny shifting modes

N should be nornal , fuel efficient way of driving your car , shifts are lower RPMs
S refers to Sport Mode, exact driving pleasure and shifts up at higher RPMs , your car accelerates faster with this mode chosen

I have no idea what X refers to , sorry . I have 1/2 on my ride , it's for using in winter mode

Try pressing the X when you have an unwanted passenger aboard.

Don't forget, pics are a must.

The X position of the switch locks out first gear. If you look at it closely you'll notice that it is an X over a 1.

Thank you! Ha ha...I almost put that it was a 1 with an X through it. So what would be the reason to use this?

To reduce the chance of wheelspin on slippery surfaces and/or a more leisurely, stately, take-off from a stop.

Cheers

LOl...I think it only works when I wear my superhero disguise.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

I checked the switch when I got in the car and it is actually a 1 with a / thru it, rather then an X. Low wheel spin in slippery situations i.e. snow and ice or drag racing are few of the reasons to use it. Not that I'm suggesting you should be drag racing your XJ40.
