Steve:
I get about 16 around town - which isn't thrilling. But, I can get upwards of 28 on the highway! One nice day I got 30 mpg on a trip at 55 mph.

Cheers,
Scott

Be easy on the throttle and do not floor it . Driving style drastically affects fuel consumption

I get about 19 mpg around town (Los Angeles !) and I drive quick. The wife gets about 15 mpg, she loves waiting at traffic lights. On a run - LA to phoenix, I get about 27.5 that's keeping it between 90 and 105 mph.....Roger.

My XJ40 is pretty much the same as everybodys above 18 city but can get around 25 to 30 highway! Just another reason why I love jaguars.

Use cruise controll as much as you can, big gains if set below 65 mph.

Wow, that's the best I have seen. I drove about 300 miles last Saturday, 90% highway at 74-80mph without the heat on. The best I could get was 23, and that was short lived. When arriving home the final reading was 22.8

16-18mpg with an average speed of 27mph using 10 gallons of gas....which by the way is an astounding and absurd 60$

Last week my 1990 XJ40 with 175,000 miles traveled across Colorado, 275 miles at an average of 55 mph, and at the end of the trip the tank was filled - averaged 30 mpg... The mileage since then has been country and city driving and the computer shows 21 mpg...

Time will tell how it works out in the future..

May 13th UPDATE - After another trip it looks like I am getting 28 mpg on 60-65 MPH highway traveling. Going up to 75 mph it drops to 24 mpg. The higher speed does make a big difference. Need to get a GPS to check the speedo, at highway posted speed I always have people bunch up behind me. No freeways around here, just two lane roads..

My commute seems to be in the 21-23 mpg range. A about 80% freeway in the 70-75 mph range. It's about the same as my old Volvo 240 turbo but a much nicer car.

Over the years I have turned into an Easy driver.

I Ease my speed up to the traffic flow.

If the traffic is light, when going uphill I allow the car to drop slowly in speed to keep from going to higher power settings then allow the car to accelerate on the down hill stretches.

Again if the traffic flow allows I keep my maximum speed at 65 mph. I have found that best fuel economy is at 50 MPH - 30 mpg. At 65 mph I am at 28 mpg or better, then at 75 mph I am down to 22 mpg.

If I go back to my more youthful methods of driving, got to get there quick style - the mileage will drop to 22 mpg or below.

I do enjoy going back into the twisty windy mountain roads and push it. It then drops to well below 18 mpg, easy to do. I have to do this on a monthly basis to clean the carbon out of the cylinders!

I also have about 175,000 on my car. But it is in great tune.

Exclamation XJ40 Mileage

Wow, I'm lucky to get 13mpg around the city from my '91 XJ40 Sovereign, but get around 26mpg on a trip. Admittedly, I always have my air conditioning running and the transmission in sport mode, but I don't know how much of a difference those things would make. I do a lot of short local trips which don't get the engine hot and I think that is the reason for my high average city usage - When I do a long city drive the car usually returns about 19mpg.

Ross

In the area that I live it is mainly farm country, no cities as such, no stop and go traffic and other things that kill gas mileage. When winter gets here my local mileage drops to about 12 mpg, for the car gets started 10 minutes early and idles to allow it to warm up first. It can get to -20 deg F. here in the Colorado mountains some mornings and usually around to 0 deg every night in January and February.

Most roads in the area are 55 to 65 mph and overall light traffic which aids to better gas mileage, plus most of the time I drive it very easy. Until I get into the twisty roads in the mountains which go on forever..

Default Xj40 mpg

Mountain Pilot,

-20F doesn't compute for me - it's simply unimaginable. It can get bloody cold here in Sydney by our standards, but the overnight temperature seldom drops below 32F (0 C), so anything below about 26.5F (-3C) is beyond my experience.

However, I recently drove 800km (450mls) home from a town called Tenterfield, which is in our New England Ranges where in winter there can be much snow and freezing temps. I made this drive in August, our last winter month, as the last leg of a three-week driving holiday, my first in the Jag.

By the time I got to the top of a mount named Ben Loman, the highest in the Ranges, the temperature gauge in my car had dropped from Normal to its bottom level. I got a shock, instantly thinking that the engine was about to seize anad leave me stranded on the summit for hours in sub zero temperatures with no heater, there having been so little traffic around that day (I'm a dunce relative to matters mechanical).

Anyway. I kept moving and the gauge gradually rose back to normal as I descended. I had not previously seen a temp gauge drop, that alone zero. But the Jag and I survived and live to roar another day.

And just so you know, "Rosspot" is a nick name given to me by my cricket club. It's a combination of "Ross", which is my is surname, and the fact that I drink a lot of booze, making me in our lingo a "pisspot".

Thanks for the information, and keep yourself and your Jag nice and warm this coming winter.

Typical Winter Snowy Morning in Colorado - about 10 deg F - Clear mornings are colder.

Sorry I did not have my XJ-40 this last winter, will post some winter photos of it later....

I have a collection of 1960 to 1966 Chevy Corvairs - these are Tan - 1964 & Red - 1960 - Run great on snow and ice - Have engine block heaters plugged in on all cars when I plan to drive them -

When I had my '90 XJ6 I averaged about 19 mpg in town and 26-28 highway mpg. Oddly enough, my trip computer mileage was pretty accurate at 80 mph, but a bit squirrelly at 60 mph.

24mpg on average. About half highway and half in-town driving.
