Question What type of anti-freeze are you using?

Good Day,

I have been looking and reading a few threads on coolant but no one has mentioned the OEM coolant. What is the OEM coolant for 1992 XJ6 models? Has anyone came up with a solid answer for what is the best coolant to use? One more, has anyone used Pentofrost++?

Any help would be appreciated.

Happy Holidays to all!

Default coolant

I used Pentofrost NF in my 94.Mainly because it is phosphate free which is what the Jag manual recommends. The parts store I bought it from said they sell alot of it because it is also used in BMW,Mercedes, etc. I flushed my system out and put in the Pentofrost-you don't want to mix it with any other brands- and the car ran fine in the 90+ degree heat last summer. Neo Cat, thank you!! You have been the only person so far to give a "Brand" name. I have researched Pentosin antifreeze and found them to be closer to the Jaguar "BS 6580" requirement. Have you used or heard of Peak's Global life time? (just read that they abide by the Jaguar set standard).

Again, thanks!

I guess my comments on this would be similar to your oil thread- use what the OEM recommends in the owner's manual. At least you know it's proven to work successfully.

I looked at the Global and if I recall according to Peak it will work but after researching online there was an issue with the formula or maybe it wasn't phosphate free. Don't recall now but decided the Pentofrost was the better choice.

Mikey,

Your answers to both threads are appreciated. However, due to the year of my XJ6 (1992), the OEM recommendations are no longer readily accessible. So, 'I am wondering what other owners are using/found as replacements'.
Research has proven that around 1996, some of the requirements changed and not all Jaguars required the same grade fluids. Also, the Owners manual is very vague when describing fluids and the Haynes manuals refer you to the Owners manual. This is what prompt me the ask the questions on both oil and coolant.

Again, both your comments are appreciated.

Neo Cat,

Thanks again! I did a bit of research on both product lines and "Peak Global lifetime 50/50" IS compliant to the BS 6580 and (lol) available at Walgreens. Pentofrost is by origin a better choice, I agree. However, I have to completely flush, inspect and evaluate the entire engine. I've chosen the coolant system first, followed by the oil and transmission (which all have problems). As of now, I don't see a coolant leak but luck says there is. So, I have to find a readily accessible coolant.

If you know of any online parts stores or accessory shops, please inform me.

Not sure I understand. The owners manuals are readily available and must contain specs for the fluids, no?

Mikey,
The problem is the 94 owners manual says to use Jaguar coolant-a bit pricey- or a phosphate free antifreeze conforming to BS6580. I'm sure the 92 manual says the same. Otherwise no other info in the manual! Hence the reason to do the research.

Mikey,

I have the original owners manual. However, this is what it says;

"Coolant- Jaguar Anti-freeze and summer coolant. Should this not be available then phospate free anti-freeze conforming to specification BS 6580 may be used".

Due to this statement, I was wondering what other owners found compatable to the "BS 6580". I have also asked where they are buying/ordering their coolants from. Again, I live in Wyoming and there are no Jaguar dealerships close to my location.

Recently, I called a Jaguar dealership in Denver, Colorado. I asked them what coolant they use and would recommend. I WAS TOLD BY THEIR MECHANIC; IF FLUIDS WERE NEEDED TO TOP OFF, THEY JUST ADD A PHOSPHATE FREE, GREEN IN COLOR COOLANT. The Mechanic did not mention if their coolant was BS 6580 or not. Furthermore, he did not tell me/know where to order the 'Jaguar' brand coolant. (lol).

I have found the answer to my question about the coolant. I have purchased "Peak Global Lifetime 50/50" a product that does meet the set standards - in a pinch.

Thank you for all help.

OK- gotcha now. BS 6580 was the standard for many many years pretty much across the industry- but that was in the day when all coolants were the same general type.

As far as I know, our good old standard green Prestone meets spec BS 6580, as does Peak

PEAK GLOBAL® LIFETIME® Antifreeze & Coolant

both of which are available everywhere.

50/50 is the most important issue regarding anti-freeze. Any brand name will do. Head gasket failures are common in these cars, due to lack of knowledge from previous owners who have just added/used straight antifreeze. Which over time clogs every port within the head.
