Default XJ40 outside side moldings (door guards)

I am a new member to this forum and and new owner of an old Jaguar. I am glad that there is so much information about the cars however I was not able to find the answer that I am looking for.
I own a 1988 XJ6 Arctic blue, I bought it with damaged driver's side fender and I am in the process of finding one. So, I was able to locate one that has a side molding that I don't need, so I'd like to know if the molding on this car is riveted or is held in place by double sided tape. Unfortunately the fender in question is far from me and I can not see it for myself.
I am attaching a picture of the fender any input is appreciated, I don't even know if this is and OEM trim, or aftermarket.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Adrian

Welcome to the forum portman5,

First let me say you can never be certain what a dealer or PO has done!

That looks like the stuck-on rubber/chromed plastic composite trim available for the later X300 model.

The XJ40 listed side moulding is a very much flatter chromed metal held on with large headed pop rivets.

If the type that's on this wing is the X300 pattern, it's secured with double sided tape and can be carefully peeled off.

Thanks Graham I am sending another picture of the right hand side fender that shows a better picture of the molding.
I have a feeling that this is not an original part.
I look forward to be active in this forum!

Default XJ40 outside side moldings (door guards)

Welcome,

The molding is identical to the molding I have on my 89 XJ6, and it is considered OEM. I think if you searched the photo archives and filtered down to 88-89 MY's, you will find it standard.

Thanks Rob,
Do you know if this molding is riveted or is held with double side tape?

I'm pretty sure it's double stick tape. I know that's a lousy answer, but I've never had to take them off.

I can tell you this, and you may do this yourself in the future, I've had the interior door panels off on all of the doors to replace the door handles and I do not recall (i would have noticed too) any rivets or plastic fastening devices protruding through the exterior door shell to hold the moulding on. So I feel pretty confident it's tape.

Why do't you contact the person parting out the vehicle to remove one of the interior door panels and see if there is any rivets or fastening devices, should be real obvious.

Hopefully someone who has taken the moulding off with chime in on this string and provide the information.

Thanks Rob, I think I am pretty confident now that it is held by tape, the place that is a salvage yard so they were good enough to send me the pictures but I don't think they will go as far as to remove the inner panel on the door.
I will be picking the fender in the next couple of days and will be posting the findings.
Thanks again!

Just feeling the back of the wing will tell you if it has been riveted on.

FWIW, my guess is that the car has been painted sometime in the past, the coach line tapes are in the wrong place and neither of my XJ40s have/had the side moulding illustrated.

I agree Richard about the side strips being in the wrong place, maybe it was painted and if so I hope the color matches my car. I think mine might have been repainted at some point or at least partially repainted, the paint looks remarkably good for it's age except for the upper section of the driver's side handle that is a little faded from rubbing of the thumb, the rubber seals around the glass looks very good too.
But the car was a one owner and only 75030 miles on it! I'll take a picture and post it here when it's fixed.
