When you switch on the ignition you should hear the fuel pump running for a few seconds. If no sound, that could indicate there is a problem with the fuel relay or the fuel pump.
You can also open the fuel line in the engine compartment to see if fuel is present in the fuel lines.

Never put the battery back in backwards if you pull out to recharge it

The fuel pump will run for 4 seconds then off by design

It will turn on again when the crankshaft position sensor sees engine rotation fot the duration of your drive

You can jumper the fuel pump relay across socket 30 and 87 to directly run the fuel pump

You should hear the pump running at this point

use a blade type connector for better current flow through the heavy gauge wire jumper and not just jamming some wire into the sockets

The auto parts store can help build this jumper with a tool and parts kit they keep behind the counter

The pump will run at all times with the key in your pockets so plan accordingly

Sometimes after sitting the fuel pump can get stuck and by starting the car with a battery charger connected with a higher voltage then just the battery can free up a stuck pump motor

A 50 amp charger would be best as a 10 amp charges at a lower voltage but is still above a fully charged battery of 12.75 volts DC

an example would be say 15 volts for a 50 amp charger vs. 13.5 volts for a 10 amp charger , that's how they work to deliver amps rating

This additional voltage may force the pump free as voltage is a force you want to increase

You can bang on the fuel tank with your fist to jar the fuel pump loose and to run , once running it will work itself free and probably continue with no further problems limited by the service life of the pump motor

In the case of later cars this could work, however the OP's car is an 88 with an external fuel pump.
