RE: xj40 suspention
it is actually recommended by jaguar to replace the self leveling suspension with standard shocks and springs,
the parts are no longer available for the self leveling, and it isnt actually very good,
standard shocks and springs can go straight in and the pipes for the self leveling can be capped

Acutually, the self leveling shocks are still available. I wouldn't recommend them, but they are easily obtainable.
The conversion kit comes with all associated bushings, etc. What you may want to look at is the springs. The Jaguar kit supplies new springs but most aftermarket units do not. If there is no sag in the rear, no need to do the springs. The question is what not do them since you are there. No need to do the job twice.

RE: xj40 suspention
Hey Ken, my rear end is def sagging on mine and I'd assume it needs springs. I had rear struts replaced in Nov 2004. Are there already springs back there or is that part of the whole converting the rear leveling suspension to the shock/spring package through Jag or aftermarket. If you could point me in the right direction I'd like to know an estimated price to switch out to shocks/spring, or if I only need springs. Thanks!

The did have springs on the self leveling system. It's a coil over shock / hydralic setup. Spring kit for the good Boge shocks:

Hey Ken thanks. When I clicked the link for just the springs, it mentions there for springs with the XJ40's without the self leveling system. If thats what the W O meant. Would I still be able to use these springs or do u recommend the whole spring kit that a little more pricey??

RE: xj40 suspention
So Ken all you think I'll need is the set of rear springs? If that's the cure for the major sag then I'd be very happy. Only thing is I order most of my Jag parts through Welsh Jaguar and the same pair of springs is $100 bucks less than yours. You got some competition out there bud!!

Yikes! I will check our sources and get right with the pricing. Thanks for the heads up. It's that kind of feed back that lets us know when we are upside down in the market place. Yes, those are the springs you need. The sagging springs may have worn your shocks out again. If they are Boge or KYB, they should have a lifetime warranty.

RE: xj40 suspention
nice nice very nice. Thanks a lot Ken! I just put my Jag back on the road today (about a month earlier than normal) becuase I definitely want to get the springs done as well *** the overheating issue with that fan clutch we talked about. If all that is done b4 the end of April I'll be a happy camper then i can sell it in perfect condition to get a less mileage XJ40 or maybe just keep mine for one more summer! I dont know yet too many decisions!

RE: xj40 suspention
Well I ended up ordering the fan clutch this morning so hopefully that will cure my slight overheating problem. However, I didnt order the set of rear springs because they're apperently not the right springs if you still have that self leveling system?? When I ordered the part this morning from Welsh Jaguar he said I didnt have any real choice but to go with that complete conversion kit that you also mentioned Ken...which I def dont have the money for right now.
It's weird because their spring set is $100 cheaper than yours but their conversion kit is more than yours. lol. Anyways I'm going to hold off on the rear suspension for now since it's not like the car is bobbing around back there, it has just bugged me for a while since the back sits slightly lower than front. After I get the overheating thing fixed shes going back up for sale and I'll let the next owner fix the suspension!

Hi,
I' reviving this thread (hopefully) because I want to replace the self-leveling suspension, too. I always thought that you have to replace the springs anyway, otherwise you get a bumpy ride. Now I've found this on http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/de...3-1613225.html I've read that some of you guys just replaced the shock absorbers, but don't you have a sagging rear end if the car's load? And if you run over bumps, does the rear end bounce? I've test-driven a Jag with a cheap conversion and it did this. And in another forum, someone explained that the SLS works on the principle that the rear springs alone are too weak to support the weight of car, so that the hydraulic system can control the car's height with the pressure in the shocks - sounds logical too me.
So my question is: Does the cheap conversion (shocks alone) really work, or is it just a solution that works good on even roads without bumps and potholes, and not if the car's loaded? And what might be trick with those KYB-shocks in the link above? Are they any different from the shocks you're using?
