You need to download the S-91 AJ6 Engine Management Guide.

It is a large file but it will answer most of your questions.

Thank you sir. That was what I needed. I'll get at it this afternoon. I will clean out that purge valve first, then go from there. Should be fun.

I wish this site could handle live video, I could broadcast my projects in real time (as everyone else could as well). Actually I know a way we can do this, I will contact an admin.

Default Culprit

As you can see in the picture, I found the culprit. I had to get very creative to fix that. The original hose is 1/2 to 5/16 tapered. Not easy to find in the same day.

ff 89 triggered again. Must be the purge valve itself. Does anyone have a place to get the reducing hose? I went to the junk yard, I found 3, they were all broken as well. I checked our sponsor suppliers as well. I'm having no luck finding that piece. 1/2 to 5/16 rubber hose.

If you cannot find the right hose, possibly have a machine shop turn you out a reducer hose coupling?

Hmm I have the same rubber reducing hose cracking on mine. Here is where I got mine: motorcarsltd.com

Also another option is to go to the shope and buy some 1/2" vinyl hose. Go out with a torch and slowwwwly heat it up untill one end is strechy and slowly stretch the hose around the fitting. Sometimes a fat pen like a sharpie is useful to strecth the hose. Once you get it on there and let it cool it will shrink a bit making a nice fit.

It ain't gonna kill you or your car to have it broken for now though so I would say order it online or from a Jag dealer.

The S-91 .pdf is in the 'sticky' at the top of the XJ40 section in the XJ40 FAQ.
You might need 10 posts to gain access.

Eureka! This is how it works, mates: Sorry MTR - never had that code before. But, for some time now I have nursed the suspicion that the bottom of my charcoal canister has some loose. It is the only thing that explains the buzzing that is coming from that general area accompanied by some new smells and bits of black dust falling from the shield. Problem is, I have not been able to figure out a way to take that lower shield off to gain access to the canister. The screws just keep turning but not loosening. It never dawned on me to go in through the wheel well itself until I saw the pictures you posted! Duh.
Thanks for posting and best of luck on the code. I'm sure you'll get it sorted. cheers!

They are the craziest screws i have ever encountered. They don't back out. Rather they are supposed to loosen enough for you to pull them out. There is a rubber ring around the screw, that is part of the screw. When these were new (20 years ago) I am sure they worked well. Now they are impossible to work with. Thank for the linked for the reducer, they have it and its cheap. Here is a picture of the one I made. The first time I did this I thought because the reducer was broken it was causing the code. Now I have also changed the purge valve itself. Lets see what happens.
