Actually it is probably closer to $27k but 30 is a nice round number.

I have two xj6's.

The first appears to be relatively rust free but no motor or transmission.

The second has more rust (doesn't appear fatal though) and a 4.2 litre motor and BW transmission.

The plan is to use the best of both, repair what can be repaired, replace what can't.

I am having trouble adding more than one photo. So I will add them one at a time.

Condition currently unknown. Although it turns with a socket on the crankshaft and I can feel some compression.

The plan is to determine the state of the engine, strip it down to clean throughly and replace consumable parts, seals, welsh plugs etc. Hoping to avoid major rebuild.

I'm $16k in and using it as a daily driver, actually it has been on the road the whole time except for 1 week for paint shop and 10 days for heart transplant.

I hope that $27k included building the shed,lol. I would die for that work space.

25 of the 27 is the shed. I bought the cars first and then, with the blessing of my wonderful wife had the shed built, 12 x 8 m ( 40 x 26 feet for those who refuse to join the rest of the world and use metric units).

I have had the cars for a couple of months but only moved them into the shed this weekend. Now I can get stuck in.

My goal is to be finished for my daughter's year 12 ball (2021). So this won't be a quick restoration.

I'd be happy if 90% of my coin had gone into a shed first. I've done most of my work in a space I couldn't open the doors. But you do what you got to do.

 

Done that one, just a couple of months short of the engines demise. Still think it is my favourite day with this car.

In 1986, the Previous Owner of Nix poured an excess of $30,000 into her (I have receipts), $6000 in the leather alone! In 1986 dollars! Of course he hired it all done, but still! (And in 2014-2015 we put another several thou in brakes and suspension replacement/repairs among other things)

I've read in here that one should NEVER add up the whole cost of these projects because it's simply too depressing. I never have, but the Nix folder is getting Really Fat and I do get curious sometimes.

Husband would give body parts for a shop like that, but as there's no place to put it I tell him to clean up the garage (900 sq.ft.) and be content.

Yup, on all counts !!!


1. A really neat shed. I would salivate over that!


2. This house was built in 51. Mostly to pre WWII thinking. Some great, some merely out dated. My "double garage" just might allow two pre WWII dimension cars, the small ones, to fit. But, not sure about opening the doors of either!!!! Design intention good, execution not so much!!


3. So, shop stuff along three walls. That leaves just enough room for the Jaguar and limited access to the "machinery. The dryer and water heater did use "good" space. Tank type WH gone, tankless in, better!!! I built a leanto at the rear wall. It houses the "big" 6hp air compressor and shelves. I should have relegated the dryer to that space and the shelves into the shop.


But, in one way or another, I did the LT1 for 4.2 swap! Part in the driveway and part indoors.


4. At one time, I had a spread sheet on my ancient Dell AXIM pocket PC. Lost in some crash. Probably, a good thing. $'s??? Short of thirty grand, Oh yeah. Does that make me feel a little better. Sorta, but time heals!!!


I've done far worse with $'s and little to show for it. At least, I do have a more than decent Jaguar.


And, not to mention the stress relief it offered in the 2001-2006 working years. Two fold, career, and Jaguar!!


Off to 'stress relieve" daughter. Stress management not among her considerable skills!!!

well by 1995 i had spent over $30,000. , by todays money i guess around $45/50,000..

all labor done by myself, and interior, except seats FLOFIT leather.

all engine performance mods, 4speed transmission mods, rear gear changes, all suspension/ brake mods.

all body/design work ,including paint work.

plus rewire all under hood,relays, connectors, harnesses, alternator ,starter.ETC.

complete fuel system redesign engineering, and installations.

much i probably forgot! not to forget redesign of cooling system, NO overheating here.

you just gotta love doing things to your car, also helps to keep you sane!

 

I used to keep detailed spreadsheets for work on the cars, still do. However I deleted the cost column. Got to a stage where I just didnt want to know and potential buyers dont care anyway. I just keep key receipts for any major work ($1000+) done by others. Thankfully not to many of those yet.

 

I always keep a spreadsheet on my cars... not always a great thing to look at but helpful finding parts sources for others. It all started in 1992 when I bought this 1971 Series 1 XJ. I think when all done it will be closer to 50K... the cost of adding 12 feet onto the rear of the garage is not included in the car restoration costs!

Unless you can do the work yourself, the amount would be almost twice as much. Finding people to do work on 45+ year old cars is getting harder each day... plus they have to learn how just like we do...

But, my car is now almost "done", only have to put it back together from the bare metal paint job... the rear and trunk is now done and will start on the front end stuff on Sunday. Once the front lights and grills are re-installed it will be legal to drive on the street again.

Only things I have left to purchase is a complete Furflex kit when I put back in the interior and recover the front door panels again as I just installed S3 door pockets and I now have a extra hole in the material that is not needed.

All is new stuff... brand new crate V8 motor, heads, 200R trans and expensive EZ-EFI 2.0 fuel injection conversion. It was assembled and run on the engine dyno to prove the components worked as I thought. I replaced the fuel system from the filler cars (S3) and new tanks (S3) and all new fuel lines to the front of the car.

All the rubber parts and seals have been replaced, new front window and the car has been rewired under the hood with modern wiring. AC is all updated and the heating...everything works on the car!

Brand new custom interior complete with the headliner and PT Cruiser front seats. Completely insulated inside and all the fuel system lines. Most labor done by me except paint and upholstery...too many mods now to mention here as I keep a document just so I can remember all that has been done.

I think everything on the car is new or rebuilt - if new was not available...still cheaper than a new Jaguar and I can fix it!

 

Not only that, it has a Lot more character!

question; has anyone on this site ever done a complete restoration on a rotessorie rollover rig, like total strip down of car to just a body/floor platform,, nothing left on the skeleton.

while i'm askin, i have pix of mine that way, but they are on VHS tape, wonder how to take single pix one at a time off the VHS?

by the way i no longer have a VHS player or camera!

Hard to put a price on a hobby. I do not even want to think what I have into mine,,,how much money I could have made with the time I have spent on it,... not to mention the mechanicals cost. I call it ( my forever endeavor) Might even get to ride in it one day if I am not dead from old age...

 

Im really happy im not the only one whose dumped 30+ thou into their car, but being 22 i dont have a cent to spend anywhere else

There are a few VHS tapes around here. My dear departed had some stuff on some. Others comercial tapes on her favorite heroine, Princess Diana. And, I to an extent. Each a gorgeous tall blonde. Although, I teased mine that her taste in men was far superior to that of Diana!!!


Off in the corner, here, I kept one of our VHS players. It might work.


I think there are commercial services that can move VHS to digital.
And, that might make stills from that feasible.


Started to "play" with two ancient SONY Digitals. One seems work. I thought they were the same. NOPE, one can do movies, the other apparently not. The one from the thrift shop came with spare batteries, but no charger. The on line score came with more Lithium Ion batteries and a charger!!!! One seems to have accepted a charge.
Both use ancient 3 x 5 floppies as storage medium. Yahoo, this old Dell has a port for them!!
