1973 XJ6 Series 1 Console AC/heat control knobs
A question for anyone out there with an owners manual for a 73 XJ6 or who otherwise has independent knowledge of the operation of the 2 knobs on the back of the console below the round vent which provides AC/Vent/heat to the back seat passengers. Which knob is for what?
Fred
I am back home now and will scan the HEAT and AC manual pages today and send them to you directly about the heat and AC controls.
But, the book says "Three controls are provided to channel air to the rear compartment
Turn the right hand knob clockwise and the left hand knob anti-clockwise to open flaps on each side at the rear of the console (two lower knobs on the rear of the console). turn the central knob of the spherical outlet clockwise top open (center big outlet). This outlet may be pivoted in any direction."
WHEN THE RIGHT HAND TUBE IS USED FOR THE CENTER VENT FOR MORE AIR FLOW THE RIGHT HAND REAR KNOB IS USELESS AS THIS AIR IS
USED IN THE FRONT.
Plus, I will send info on changing the flow of air to the side vents from the center vents outside air... just another mod you can do.

Roger, I wouldn't mind seeing this mod. My next project was to have a look what I can do to duct air con to the side vents.
If you have stock Jag AC, the vents are there... maybe clogged?
If not, you could run hoses from your AC system outlets to the sides? There are ports on each lower side of the side vents that connect to the stock evaporator that could be easily used to connect hoses. You would have to create a Tee connection so you can have all your current vents and add the side vents.
The mod only changes the outside air from the center vent on the cowl to the side vents... will not help in this case. It has nothing to do with AC or heat distribution.
By using the stock Jag choke cable we disconnect part of the linkage from the center of the dash behind the windshield. Changing this connection and by pulling it with the choke cable - we can choose air to the side vents or the fascia. If your car uses the stock cable for the choke - you would have to add another choke cable...
If you are still interested, I will look for the photos of the changes...

It is not a stock air con, dealer added. I have been looking at cutting a hole in the back of the air con outlet and teeing into side/console vent somewhere.
Haven't really put much thought into it yet. Pictures would be good, but no hurry.
Thanks

Here are the photos and a brief description of Robert's mod... we both did
this so long ago we do not have the exact details...
Pictures are in the .zip file and the Word doc has the details that are still remembered... looking at the photo will show how it is done.
