Cool 1981 XJ6 Power windows

I have a 1981 XJ6 that I love. It's been running really nicely. Just today, the following things happened, seemingly simultaneously.

Left front power window stopped working. Left BACK window stopped working. Sun roof stopped working. There is a distinctive "clicking sound" coming from the fuse area beneath the glove compartment.\

Everything else works perfectly. I read the manual carefully, but could not find info about these particular fuses, even the window even have fuses.

The window circuit is split into two branches, each branch having its own circuit breaker.

You have a faulty breaker, OR you have a significant problem in the circuit that is causing the breaker to 'trip'....some sort of overload like a shorted wire or faulty motor.

The breakers have red/slate wires and are on the component panel below the glove box, roughly like this:

You can swap the wires and see if the problem goes to the right side windows

If it comes down to replacing the breaker you can use a generic automotive breaker for $5-$6 or so. No need to seek out the $30 Jaguar type unless you really want to

Doug,

Thank you VERY much. The information is clear and so helpful. I make a concerted effort in my life to be helpful to others, but I am cognizant of the fact that my lack of Jag expertese means that I tend to be ASKING for help. I wish this was not so. Back in the day, I used to rip VW Bugs apart (down to the crankcase) and people would flock to me for advise. Those days are gone. Thanks again!!

You're very welcome, and no worries about asking lots of questions. That's what it's all about !

Cheers
