1982 xj6 wont start/many problems
Good Day every one... I have a XJ6 thathas a 4.2L. I have had this car sitting for about 1 year. I started up and I towed the car from Pa to Ok, state. I put in a new battery in and the car. This what happens. I put the key in and there is nothing happens/ take off the battery cable andput itback on and turn the keyand thecar would start but run only for about 10 to 20 second then it dies. then Iturned the key off then tried to start the car again and it wont start. it just turns over but wont start. the fuel pump is running. I tried to start and pump the gas pedal to try to start the car. any help please call me if you like 580-402-3718 or text me. Thank you in advance

also sounds like the Starter or Starter Relay failing.
Start the troubleshooting by cleaning all the electrical wiring contacts, like the two electrical Junctions at the firewall on either side of the engine, also clean the contacts at the cylinder head on the passenger side of the top and rear of the engine. There are two ground straps there that need to be shiny clean and tight. Use a brass brush to clean all connectors and surfaces.
Using heavy duty jacks and extra supporttowork under the car, (these cars are very heavy and if it falls on you you're dead for life),get under the passenger's sidewhere the engine joins the transmission, and look for a large body-to-engine Ground Strap. Remove it and clean it too, especially the contact surfaces on the body and transmission and the strap itself. also the bolts.
Also clean the two Thermal Sensor contacts/wires on top of the engine, and the battery cables. Keep the battery fully charged. Walmart sells a cheap Black & Decker Battery Maintainer, i've had great service out of it.
After all this is done, you will notice the car becomes "alive" and "peppier" electrically speaking.
If the engine dies after starting, (a very fast shut-off, as if it loses all electrical energy), then I wouldcheck the Ignition Switch as Ken said. These can be carefully disassembled and cleaned for like-new service.
