I was wrong, it a 1985 XJ6 Sovereign and not a 1984. Took these pictures right before I dropped it off at the paint shop, they are buffing out all the scratches and giving it a nice wax. They are also fixing the drivers seat, replacing the rubber in the trim and repainting the pin stripping.

Nice looking car. I had to scrap a similar looking Sovereign here in California since our "wonderful" emissions laws would have made it nearly impossible to register.

You might ask Gregory, but all models used tape for the pinstripping... not painted.

You are absolutely right. It was tape application not painted with special ends that seems like cannot be duplicated easily.

When I needed to replace some just recently I had some made up for me by a sign shop. They just copied the design and colour on thier machine. Cost me about $50.00 for three sets.

The Jaguar replacements were priced out of this world. Something like $58 per section and there are 8 sections per car.

I'm having the detailers remove the pinstripping and paint a similar design in black over it. He's charging me only $80 to do that for both sides. I'll post pics when he's done.

I was looking at that car from down in Albuquerque! It looked nice in the pictures and was on a big list of possible purchases.

Had it been summer, I'd have swung up there on the motorcycle to look at it and given the pictures you've posted, probably bought it. Glad it went to someone who digs it.

The car looks great, zero rust on the body and under carriage. The interior looks as nice as it does in the pictures. However, the previous owner let it sit for a long time so it needed a new fuel pump, filter, starter, vacuum advance, rack & pinion and cams. There were some recalls that were never done so having them done now. Also needed new tires. I also bought a new Moto-Lita steering wheel. But overall, I think it's a very nice car that deserved to be resurrected, and will enjoy making it my daily driver...when it's not snowing.

bah! you crazy Aussie, the steering wheel is exactly where it's supposed to be. However, I do wish this car came with a manual trans...don't really care for the 3speed auto. I was soooooo tempted to trade the 1985 XJ6 in for this:

Ok, just got word back from my mechanic. He said my distributor was bad and that in the near future I will need it replaced. He quoted me $800 for the part and not including the labor! From what I can tell online a distributor for my car runs around $30, or am I missing something? Also, how easy are these to replace by someone that just has a Haynes guide and no experience?

If you've replaced a distributor on any other car you can do it on your Jag. No special tricks

Cheers

Do you have a recommended maker/supplier for this replacement part? and does $800 sound like I need to find another mechanic?

Find David Boger on this site, runs an online store called everyday XJ. He got me a NOS Lucas distributor for about an 1/8 of that. What your seeing for $30 is likely the cap. Other than mine being fairly seized in the block they're easy enough to replace, just make sure you set the ignition timing once your done.

Great looking car, btw. Looks like you got an excellent deal.

Your "mechanic" will buy the $100 version and take 15 minutes to put it on, set the timing and charge you $800. Such is life. Id go for a brand new one off ebay.

I bought a rover dizzi off this guy works fine:

simonbbc | eBay

send him a message asking about a replacement for your vehicle. Find another mechanic.

Well he didn't charge me $800...though it was more than I thought was reasonable. However, it was 19 degrees this morning and my Jag fired up just fine and the heater was blowing out hot air so whatever he did, he seemed to have done a good job because before the car had problems starting in the cold.

Suggestions:

1. keep the blzck visors. Good for glare reduction. I erred in getting a light colored dash mat for my "wuzza 6" XJ6 to protect the pad against UV. Glare is much greater, learned and got blacvk for my Jeep; Much better!!

2. Remove the cubby cover and skis slope to access the master and window rocker switches. Tools, two pans, a slot screw driver and a small Pozi or Phillips. Worknover the second pan on the bench. Press the fulcrum and spead the case of the rocker switch. Watch the smal stuff. Clean the contacts, lube with a dag of dielectric, restore to the car. The windows wil operate much better. Squirt some silicon intotnhe glides and even better.

3. Contact David Boiger at everydayxj for badges.

4. Remove the seat cover and visit an upholstery shop. They can resew the rips very neatly.

5. If the side mouldings are riveted on, it is a project to get them off and fill the holes.
If sticy dtyuff on, not so much. But paint difference will be an issue. Dumb things. Mebbe just a spray in body color to diminish their appearance.

Carl
You have a great car, vorsicht with the after market stuff.

Thanks guys for all the helpful advice! I have contacted everydayxj and received a prompt response back from David. And once the mechanics put in new window switches and lubricated the window the windows work 10000% better, and no need to replace the motors...at least for now. I drove the car yesterday and received tons of looks of admiration, can't wait for summer to be able to drive it across country.
