I have been having a problem that just started with my 1985 XJ-6. Randomly, it just doesn't start. Turn the key and all you hear is click, click, click. Don't do anything for about 1 hour, then it starts right up! Runs like a top for about 5 days and then click, click, click. My mechanic had it for two days and couldn't get it to fail. I asked them to replace the starter since we both thought that might be the culprit. Had it back for 2 days and click, click, click. Waited an hour and it started right up. It's frustrating becuase I never know when it's going to fail. Drove it to Indiana (6 hours) with multiple stops, stayed 5 days and drove it back with no problems. Stopped at a coffee shop as soon as I got in to town and when I got in it to leave, click, click, click.

Anybody have any ideas?

 

Try to use the search option on the forum. My opinion, crank position sensor, amplifier and/or coil.

Thanks to mrtalkradio and Doug for your quick responses. The started IS working because we replaced it and I had the same problem 2 days later. I will pass your comments on to my mechanic and post the resolution if/when we determine what it is.
