Red face 1985 XJ6 No pulses to fuel injectors

I am recommissioning my 1985 XJ6 after it has been stored for over 10 years. I have worked through all the fuel tank/pump/filter issues on now have good pressure at the fuel rail.
Engine spins well, good spark but no start. Followed Doug's suggested fault finding from an earlier post and found that +12V was present on both terminals of the injectors but one side never goes to zero to operate the injector.
Admission: In my haste to start this car I had to use another battery. The original one was well and truly dead. I pulled a large battery out of my X350 knowing it had plenty of power. Unfortunately, when connecting up the jumper leads I crossed them over and connected reverse power to the car.
Could this have caused damage to the Fuel Injection ECU?

Cheers

If the key was "off" when the polarity mishap occurred I think you'll be OK.

A couple easy checks to begin with:

At the rear of the water rail is a bundle of ground wires. Half dozen or so. These are the grounds for the entire fuel injection system. Make sure this grounding point is clean and tight.

Next, also at the water rail, look for the white/black wire running aft from the coil "-" post. Make sure the wire and connection at the coil are in good shape. This is a "trigger" wire for the fuel injection.

If no joy, post back for deeper digging

Cheers

Doug -

I think you usually mention that this trigger wire from coil to big coonector by firewall has a bullet connection somewhere along its length? Am I remembering properly?

If so maybe worth pulling that apart and giving it a good clean

Hi Doug & Worzella

I took the hint and pulled apart the bullet connector for the trigger wire, it was covered in verdigris.
After a quick clean and reassemble I was able to start the car for the first time in 10 years.
It ran a bit rough at first but then it settled down.
I had to move it out of the carport so that I could get access to 2 other cars stuck in my garage.
I will get my RH fuel tank back from cleaning this week and reinstall it.
I can then get rid of the temporary fuel tank (jerry can) in the boot/trunk feeding straight into the fuel pump.
See photo.

It seems that the only casualty from my battery polarity reversal is a diode in the alternator.
The ignition lamp is always on when the ignition is turned off and is off when the ignition is turned on.

Cheers

Great feeling!! Woop woop.

Curious..with your temp gas can feed, where is the return flow going. I assume into the tank that is remaining?

Yes, I have the Fuel Tank Selection Switch set to the LH tank so that the returned fuel will go there.
Otherwise it would end up on the ground under the car.
