Default 1985 XJ6 Starter Motor Removal and Replacement

I have ordered a replacement starter motor XK's in California. I have the Series III Service Manual that includes no diagrams. I would appreciate any advice to speed up the process and help me avoid blunders. Based on the info. in the manual, thank goodness this is not a V12.

It's pretty straightforward. Unbolt, bolt-on.

There are some transmission vent pipes alongside the starter. You'll have to loosen the hold-down clips and move the pipes aside.

The starter is heavy. If you're not really careful when you lift it away it can get away from you and break off the oil sending unit, which is located a couple inches forward. Use caution...or remove the sending unit first! Only takes a minute

Removing the battery will greatly ease access to the upper mounting bolt (LHD cars)

The mounting arrangement use a rather thick spacer, about .125" or so. Sometimes this spacer stays on the old starter. Make sure to be aware of it and transfer it to the new starter

That's all I can think of at the moment

Cheers

Mark,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III forum. This is the place to post technical questions about your model.

Lost the detailed post. Short version.

Use a cord around the starter, secured above as a back up and for control during the "R& R".
