1986 XJ6 ignition
The white/yellow wire at the back of the ignition switch ....when it gets + voltage is energizes the starter relay.
The solid brown wire at the back of the ign switch (or any solid brown wire at all) is constant battery "+" voltage.
Cheers

We got a replacement for the push start we installed. This one has 4 places for wires and I know the brown is the battery. I need to identify the other wires. Solid white brown with black stripe etc. Can anyone help with this the book and diagram we have isn't very helpful

I don't quite understand. What exactly did you get?
Are you talking about a starter button? Or a replacement ignition switch/key switch?

The diagram David posted has what you need but please clarify exactly what you've got in your hands and we can help more, if needed :-)
Oh heck....I'll guess that you have a universal style replacement key switch.
One of terminals will be battery/voltage supply. Your solid brown wire should go there.
Another terminal will be "start". Your white/yellow wire will go there.
I suspect the remaining terminals would be something like "ignition 1/accessory" and "ignition 2/run".
White/pink wire would go to "ignition 1" and solid white wires would go to "ignition 2"
Your "brown/black" wire throws me a bit. Do you have both a solid brown wire and a brown/black wire?
Cheers

Yes we have both the solid brown and brown and black. The universil switch shorted out after about 30 min. Everything was running fine then under the dash sparked and started a fire. We got it put out without and major damage but now there is power when there shouldn't be any. When we got the jag started again it wouldn't shut off. Even when the battery was disconnected. Could the be a short in the wires up high?
